San Antonio Nonprofits Distribute Turkeys as Need Grows Before Thanksgiving
As Thanksgiving approaches, economic uncertainty has led to longer lines for food assistance in San Antonio. Several nonprofits and charitable organizations distributed turkeys on November 18, 2023, helping hundreds of families facing food insecurity.
At the Greater Love Baptist Church, individuals lined up for nearly a mile to receive their holiday meal. Andrew Perales, one of the many waiting for assistance, expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “It’s nice to see that the community comes out and helps each other out in times where things are gonna be a little bit rough,” he remarked.
For Reverend James Robinson, who has organized turkey distributions for over 22 years, this year marked a significant increase in demand. He noted that the lines were longer than ever, reflecting the challenges many families are currently facing. Meanwhile, at Covington Park, the Bexar County Health Department provided turkeys specifically to grandparents raising grandchildren, a growing demographic in need of assistance.
Mary Mendez, a grandmother raising her granddaughter and great-grandson, shared her experience: “I have a granddaughter that just turned 18. I’ve been raising her since she was eight months old. I have a great-grandson that I’m raising. He’s four years old. There’s a lot of people in need in times of holidays.” Her story highlights the pressing needs that many families experience during this season.
The need for food assistance in Bexar County is underscored by local officials. Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai stated, “It is a real problem; it is a problem right now,” emphasizing the critical situation many families find themselves in as Thanksgiving approaches.
Numerous organizations are stepping up to provide free turkeys and meals this week. For those looking for assistance, a comprehensive list of distribution sites is available through local resources. The San Antonio Food Bank is also actively seeking donations of turkeys to ensure that families have a joyous holiday season.
In addition to these efforts, local initiatives have emerged that connect community members through charity. Many families are turning personal tragedies into acts of kindness, further strengthening the fabric of the community.
As San Antonio prepares for Thanksgiving, the spirit of giving remains strong, even amid economic challenges. Community support is essential in these difficult times, and organizations continue to play a vital role in providing help to those in need.
