Business Leader Jim Bernhard Remembered for Community Impact
The business community mourns the passing of Jim Bernhard, a prominent figure in Louisiana’s economic landscape, who died recently. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community development, Bernhard’s legacy extends beyond business, impacting numerous lives and initiatives throughout the state.
From Humble Beginnings to Business Titan
Born in 1954 in Baton Rouge and raised in Lafayette, Bernhard graduated from Louisiana State University in 1976 with a degree in construction management. He began his career at Sunland Services, where he quickly rose to the position of executive vice president and general manager. In 1987, recognizing a gap in the market, Bernhard teamed up with two partners to acquire the assets of a struggling company for $50,000, launching The Shaw Group.
Under his leadership, The Shaw Group transformed into a major engineering and design firm, securing a place on the Fortune 500 list. By the time it went public in the early 2000s and was sold to CB&I in 2013, it boasted nearly $6 billion in revenue and employed approximately 4,000 individuals in Louisiana, with an additional 23,000 worldwide. The company held the distinction of being the only Fortune 500 firm headquartered in Baton Rouge.
A Legacy of Community Engagement
Following the sale of The Shaw Group, Bernhard established Bernhard Capital Partners, which quickly grew to become the largest private equity firm between Atlanta and Houston, managing 21 companies. Throughout his career, he consistently advocated for Louisiana, believing it was a prime location for business development and sustainability.
Bernhard’s influence extended into politics and civic engagement. He actively supported the Louisiana Democratic Party and played a key role in Kathleen Blanco‘s gubernatorial campaign in 2003. During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he led the party but resigned shortly after the disaster. The Shaw Group emerged as a crucial contractor in the rebuilding efforts, showcasing Bernhard’s commitment to his state.
Despite contemplating a gubernatorial run in 2015 and 2019, he ultimately chose to support John Bel Edwards, who won both elections. Bernhard remained dedicated to philanthropic efforts, contributing to various local initiatives, including a $4 million donation towards the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, which revitalized the downtown area.
His charitable contributions also included support for St. George Catholic Church and School, The Dunham School, and the national organization No Kid Hungry, among others. As friends and colleagues gather to honor his memory, they celebrate a life characterized by entrepreneurial success and a profound commitment to improving the community.
Jim Bernhard’s dedication to Louisiana serves as a reminder of the impact one individual can have on a community. His contributions have left an indelible mark, and his vision for a better Louisiana will continue to inspire future generations.
