Lula to Contact Trump Over Rising Tensions Near Venezuela
Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced plans to reach out to former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding concerns over the escalating military presence of the United States near Venezuela. Lula expressed apprehension that this military buildup could lead to instability in South America.
During a press briefing at the conclusion of the G20 summit in South Africa, Lula highlighted the potential risks associated with the U.S. military operations in the Caribbean Sea. “I’m very concerned about the military apparatus the U.S. has deployed in the Caribbean Sea,” he stated, emphasizing the need for diplomatic dialogue to address the situation.
The U.S. has intensified its military efforts, particularly targeting alleged drug trafficking operations emanating from Venezuela. This strategy has drawn criticism from various Latin American nations, who view it as a potential provocation that could destabilize the region further. Lula underscored the importance of maintaining South America as a zone of peace, noting Brazil’s pivotal role in regional stability.
“There’s absolutely no reason to have a war right now,” Lula remarked, referencing the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He insisted that diplomatic solutions must precede any military escalation, urging for collaborative efforts to resolve tensions peacefully.
Lula’s intentions to discuss these issues with Trump are not new. The two leaders previously addressed the situation in Venezuela during a meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in October 2025. During that encounter, Lula offered Brazil’s assistance in mediating dialogue with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
As tensions rise, Lula’s proactive approach reflects Brazil’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in South America. The upcoming conversation with Trump could play a significant role in shaping the diplomatic landscape surrounding Venezuela and its neighboring countries.
