T-Mobile Enhances Connectivity at Las Vegas Grand Prix with 5G Innovations

T-Mobile US showcased its advanced 5G capabilities at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, which took place on November 18, 2023. The telecommunications provider leveraged a combination of public-network enhancements and network slicing to address connectivity challenges during the race, which spans 3.8 miles along the iconic Las Vegas Strip and features 17 corners.

In his role as senior director on T-Mobile’s network innovation team, Scott Jacka emphasized the operator’s focus on tailored connectivity solutions for the high-profile event. T-Mobile has implemented seven distinct network slices, each optimized for specific use cases. Jacka explained, “The settings that we have in use for broadcast are different than the settings we might have at the point-of-sale, or different than the settings that might be there for team priorities.” This level of customization allows for a stable video streaming experience, crucial for the event’s broadcasting needs.

According to Roy Chua, founder and analyst at AvidThink, the various network slices facilitate a wide range of functionalities. These include support for drone videography, rooftop broadcast cameras, sports photography, and point-of-sale systems. Additionally, T-Mobile has provided private wireless connectivity with flexible edge breakout capabilities, enabling F1 production teams to process high-bandwidth video and telemetry on-site.

T-Mobile’s deployment of its T-Priority service marked a significant enhancement in public safety communications. This service ensures that safety teams and first responders, including the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), remain connected throughout the event. Jacka noted the introduction of C-Band spectrum for this occasion, which is not typically in widespread use across T-Mobile’s public network. “Our 5G on-demand produces C-Band that gives us access to clean channels for a private network,” he added.

To further bolster coverage in areas of lower density along the race route, T-Mobile deployed temporary cells on wheels (COWs) and utilized mmWave and C-Band spectrum. Jacka confirmed that while T-Mobile has established permanent infrastructure along the track’s straightaway section, the COWs are instrumental in enhancing connectivity where it’s most needed.

Chua pointed out that T-Mobile’s SuperMobile network slicing platform offers business users prioritized, secure service tiers. “After several years of supporting the race, the carrier appears to have refined a playbook for capacity planning and rapid deployment,” he stated. This strategic approach ensures that both fans and event operators benefit from a robust, production-grade 5G network, equipped with innovative services like edge breakout and selective network slicing.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix represents one of the most demanding live events globally, and T-Mobile’s enhancements illustrate its commitment to providing a seamless experience for both spectators and participants. By integrating cutting-edge technology with a focus on operational efficiency, T-Mobile continues to set a high standard for connectivity in the fast-paced world of Formula 1 racing.
