Travelers Discover Hidden Gems in Italy, Skipping Crowded Cities
UPDATE: Travelers are increasingly opting to skip Italy’s crowded tourist hotspots, like Rome and Venice, for quieter, less-known cities, resulting in a more authentic experience. Jenna DeLaurentis, who recently celebrated her mother’s retirement, shared her transformative journey through Italy’s smaller cities, revealing a trend that could change how tourists experience the country.
In May 2023, DeLaurentis and her mother visited Padua and Ravenna, two cities known for their rich history and cultural significance. They avoided the typical tourist traps, instead immersing themselves in the local ambiance, where they enjoyed gelato and explored stunning historical sites without the distraction of overwhelming crowds.
Ravenna, famous for its Byzantine mosaics, offered the pair a peaceful retreat. Highlights included the breathtaking Basilica di San Vitale, where intricate mosaics captivated their attention. “The experience was a breath of fresh air compared to the hustle and bustle of Rome,” DeLaurentis remarked.
Padua, just a short train ride from Venice, also delivered a similar vibe. While popular attractions like the Basilica of St. Anthony drew crowds in the morning, they dissipated by evening, allowing DeLaurentis and her mother to savor local cuisine and enjoy cocktails at outdoor bars. “We loved tasting Ravenna’s famed cappelletti pasta and indulging in Aperol Spritz, which originated in Padua,” she noted.
The shift toward smaller cities reflects a growing desire among travelers for authentic experiences away from the throngs of tourists. Venice alone typically attracts over 10 million visitors annually, while cities like Padua see a fraction of that, offering a refreshing alternative.
Nevertheless, the allure of renowned attractions like the Sistine Chapel remains undeniable. However, DeLaurentis emphasized that the downsides of crowded cities often overshadow their benefits. “While the sights are world-famous, they can be overshadowed by overwhelming crowds, especially during peak seasons,” she stated.
The success of this trip has left DeLaurentis eager for future travels, stating, “Next time we visit Italy, we’ll be sure to skip the big cities again to discover even more of the country’s lesser-known destinations.”
Travelers looking for a more intimate Italian experience may find inspiration in DeLaurentis’ journey. As tourism trends shift, it seems that Italy’s hidden gems are becoming increasingly popular among those seeking to explore beyond the well-trodden paths.
For anyone planning a trip to Italy, consider venturing off the beaten track. You may uncover authentic experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.
