UPDATE: The Colorado Rockies have confirmed that Warren Schaeffer will return as the team’s full-time manager for the 2026 season. This announcement comes after a dismal 119-loss season, marking the most losses in the National League since the 1962 New York Mets recorded 120.

Schaeffer, who stepped up from third-base coach to interim manager following the firing of Bud Black on May 11, faced immense challenges as the Rockies struggled to a 7-33 start. Under his leadership, the team finished a staggering 50 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

“We’re confident Warren is the right person to lead our club moving forward,” said Paul DePodesta, the new president of baseball operations, in an official statement. Schaeffer’s ability to build strong connections with players and his deep understanding of the Rockies’ culture were highlighted as key factors in his retention.

The Rockies’ performance this season was historic for its negativity, with a starting rotation that posted a 6.65 ERA, the highest since official records began in 1913. The team also allowed 1,021 runs, reminiscent of the 1996 Detroit Tigers who surrendered 1,103 runs. Moreover, the Rockies recorded a run differential of -424, the worst since 1900 and surpassing the 1932 Boston Red Sox‘s -349.

Amid these struggles, there were glimmers of hope. All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman had a breakout season, batting .278 with 31 home runs and 91 RBIs. Additionally, the Rockies celebrated 2024 Gold Glove winners in Ezequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle, showcasing emerging talent.

The Rockies also drafted Ethan Holliday with the No. 4 pick this summer, and several young prospects like Zac Veen and Yanquiel Fernandez received major league experience, hinting at a brighter future.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this team,” Schaeffer stated. “My focus remains on building a strong, unified culture based on accountability and hard work. We have a group of guys who care deeply about competing the right way, and my goal is to strengthen those relationships while leading a team our fans can embrace.”

As the Rockies prepare for the upcoming offseason, all eyes will be on how Schaeffer implements his vision for the team to rebound from this historically challenging year. Fans and analysts alike will closely monitor the Rockies’ moves as they aim to improve ahead of the 2026 season.

Stay tuned for further updates as the Rockies embark on what promises to be a pivotal journey in the coming months.
