Evan Nagler Dominates in Season Opener, Scores 24 Points
UPDATE: Evan Nagler, the senior guard for Deerfield, exploded onto the court in the season opener, scoring 24 points and leading his team to a commanding 68-33 victory over Antioch during the Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament on November 24, 2025. With this performance, Nagler has put the state on notice: he is a top contender for the title of the best shooter in Illinois.
Nagler’s first-half display was nothing short of spectacular, hitting all five of his three-point attempts and scoring 16 points in just the second quarter. “It wasn’t something that just clicked today,” he stated, emphasizing the dedicated preparation leading up to this moment. “It comes from months and months of hard work.”
Deerfield’s head coach, Dan McKendrick, praised Nagler’s performance, noting, “When the shots were there, he was ready to take them.” The team’s chemistry was evident as Nagler not only showcased his scoring ability but also contributed significantly with three assists, two of which led to dunks by 6-foot-8 senior forward Jake Pollack, a Dartmouth commit.
In an exhilarating show of athleticism, Nagler also delivered a stunning dunk over an Antioch defender, proving he is not just a sharpshooter but an all-around player. His teammate Pollack remarked, “He’s the best shooter in the state, and he hit a few,” underscoring the unwavering confidence his teammates have in him.
Beyond scoring, Nagler’s impact on the game extended to his defensive efforts and court awareness. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, “All five of us know that the order of hierarchy goes where Jake gets the most touches. Once teams hone in on Jake, it opens up everyone else.” This unselfish playstyle creates diverse scoring opportunities for the Warriors, making them a formidable opponent this season.
As the season unfolds, Deerfield aims for the 3A state championship. Nagler, who recently committed to Case Western Reserve, expressed relief in finalizing his recruitment before the season, allowing him to focus entirely on team goals. “Our goal this year is to win the 3A state championship,” he reiterated, showcasing his determination.
Officials and fans alike are watching closely as Nagler’s performance sets a promising tone for Deerfield’s season. Following this victory, expectations are sky-high, and his next performances will be critical to the Warriors’ aspirations.
With the Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament still ongoing, keep an eye on Evan Nagler and the Deerfield Warriors as they seek to build on this impressive start. Will Nagler continue to dominate and secure his place as the best shooter in the state? The basketball community will be closely following his journey.
