Caring for Seniors: A Day in the Life of a CNA
In the demanding field of senior care, certified nursing assistants (CNAs) like Morris Commesor play a crucial role in improving the lives of elderly residents. For over 13 years, Commesor has been a dedicated CNA at the Glenn Assisted Living Facility in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he provides essential support to seniors living with dementia. His work includes assisting with daily tasks such as dressing and bathing, often in emotionally charged situations.
Commesor describes his job as both physically and emotionally challenging. He works primarily in memory care, where residents may resist help due to their cognitive impairments. “It’s a tough job, but I can’t look at it as challenging,” he explained. “You have to come in with a positive mindset.” This attitude has helped him connect with residents, including a 90-year-old woman who initially rejected his assistance. With patience and encouragement, Commesor was able to help her choose a lovely dress for the day, which brought joy not only to her but also to her visiting family.
High Demand and Workforce Challenges
The demand for CNAs is increasing, especially as the aging population grows. According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, home health and personal care aides are among the most sought-after positions in the state. The nursing home industry lost a staggering 14.1% of its workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to fully recover. Many CNAs cite low pay and burnout as reasons for the high turnover in the field.
As the baby boomer generation ages, projections indicate that the population aged 65 and older in Minnesota will more than double by 2075. This demographic shift will likely lead to thousands of new assisted-living positions in the coming decade. Commesor, who is originally from Liberia and emigrated with his family from Sierra Leone in 2007, represents a growing number of immigrant caregivers in Minnesota. His dedication to his role earned him the title of Caregiver of the Year in 2017 from LeadingAge Minnesota, a nonprofit organization focused on senior services.
“He exemplifies the notion of caring for a resident like they are a family member,” stated a news release announcing his award. Commesor’s work includes everything from singing to residents to comforting families during difficult times. His commitment to fostering a warm, supportive environment is evident in his daily interactions.
A Day in the Life of a CNA
On a typical day, Commesor arrives at the facility at 06:00, ready to assist the 24 residents under his care. His responsibilities range from checking on residents’ safety to helping with personal care and serving meals. He also engages residents in activities such as exercise and entertainment, ensuring they feel valued and included.
The most rewarding aspect of his job, according to Commesor, is witnessing the smiles on residents’ faces. “When I’m driving home, it just makes my day knowing I brought joy to someone,” he shared. His empathy extends to understanding the struggles of residents who may be uncooperative due to their conditions. He emphasizes the importance of patience and flexibility, suggesting that CNAs should focus on those who are willing to accept help and return to those who are initially resistant later.
Commesor’s experiences have not only shaped his professional life but also influenced his personal habits. He now prioritizes exercise and healthy living, recognizing the importance of self-care in his demanding role. “Working in senior living is something where you make a difference in a person’s life,” he reflected.
As he encourages others to consider a career as a CNA, Commesor highlights the fulfillment that comes from helping others. “If you love helping people, it’s a good field to work in,” he said. “It’s not just about the pay; it also makes you feel like you are contributing to society.”
Through his dedication and compassion, Morris Commesor exemplifies the vital role CNAs play in enhancing the quality of life for seniors. His story is a testament to the impact that caregivers can have, not just on their residents, but on the broader community.
