The Traverse City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Board has approved a design plan for Rotary Square, allocating a budget of $2.55 million for the project. The board unanimously endorsed the “Petoskey Stone” design concept during a meeting held on April 21, 2023. While the proposal is set to move forward, several details still require resolution before construction can begin.

The design concept was developed by Progressive Companies, a consulting firm based in Grand Rapids. This initiative resulted from nearly a year of community engagement, which included public surveys, open houses, and contributions from a dedicated steering committee. The goal was to gather diverse input from local residents and stakeholders to ensure the project aligns with community needs and preferences.

Rotary Square, located along Union Street, is envisioned as a vibrant public space that enhances the downtown area. The design aims to incorporate elements that reflect the local culture and natural beauty of the region, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

As the DDA Board moves forward with the project, it will address outstanding details related to the design and implementation process. The board’s commitment to engaging the community throughout this journey underscores the importance of public input in shaping urban spaces.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to the revitalization of Traverse City’s downtown area, promoting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The DDA Board is optimistic that the improvements to Rotary Square will create a more attractive and functional public space, ultimately benefiting the entire community.

As planning progresses, updates will be shared with the public, ensuring transparency and continued community involvement in the development of Rotary Square.
