iRi NYC Partners with New Year Market for Upcycled Key Charms
Social impact brands iRi NYC and New Year Market have teamed up to launch a collection of upcycled key charms designed by seniors. This collaboration, which features handmade charms that can also be used as shoe decorations, is set to debut on March 6, 2024. The aim is to promote sustainability while providing opportunities for elderly individuals to engage in creative work.
The initiative continues iRi NYC‘s commitment to upcycling, a practice that transforms leftover materials into new products. In previous years, the brand collaborated with other organizations, including a woman-owned upcycling brand, to create items such as cup coasters crafted from surplus neoprene fabric. This year, the key charms demonstrate the versatility of upcycled materials, as they can enhance both bags and footwear.
The partnership with New Year Market is particularly significant because it empowers seniors, many of whom live alone or rely on collecting recyclables for income. The project allows these individuals to take on design roles, working alongside younger team members to turn their ideas into tangible products. This mentoring aspect fosters intergenerational relationships and promotes creativity among participants.
Crafting Sustainable Fashion
The key charms, priced between $20 and $30, are crafted primarily from leftover materials sourced from both iRi NYC and New Year Market. These include scraps from sock production, shoelaces, and small leather remnants, with the exception of metal hardware. Since its inception in 2017, iRi NYC has focused on environmentally friendly production techniques, recently enhancing its commitment to sustainable practices.
A key aspect of this collaboration is the dedication to using sustainable materials. The transition of production to Korea has allowed iRi NYC to access a variety of sustainable options without the need for large minimum orders. This shift has enabled the brand to incorporate eco-friendly materials into its designs more effectively.
According to a statement from iRi NYC, “When we first launched, none of our products had anything to do with sustainable materials. But thankfully, once we moved our production to Korea, I was shocked that they have a lot of availability with sustainable footwear materials, and they’re not too expensive.” This change marks a significant step toward making sustainability a core component of the brand’s identity.
The collaboration with New Year Market not only highlights the importance of sustainable practices but also emphasizes the role of community in creative industries. By providing opportunities for seniors to contribute to design and production, the initiative promotes social inclusion and economic empowerment.
As the launch date approaches, both organizations anticipate a positive response from consumers who are increasingly seeking products that reflect their values of sustainability and social responsibility. The upcycled key charms symbolize not just a product, but a movement towards a more inclusive and environmentally conscious fashion industry.
