As he approaches his centenary milestone, Dick Van Dyke, the beloved star of “Mary Poppins,” has shared his thoughts on death, expressing a sense of gratitude rather than fear. In a recent interview, he emphasized that he feels fortunate to have had a fulfilling life filled with music, laughter, and creativity.

In his new book titled 100 Rules for Living to 100, Van Dyke reflects on the inevitable end of life. He candidly acknowledges, “The end of my life is so much closer.” Speaking with People magazine, he elaborated on his perspective, stating, “When you expire, you expire. I don’t have any fear of death for some reason. I can’t explain that, but I don’t. I’ve had such a wonderfully full and exciting life that I can’t complain.”

Embracing Life at 99

Despite being just days away from turning 100 on December 13, 2023, Van Dyke maintains his characteristic upbeat demeanor. When asked about the biggest surprise of reaching this age, he quipped, “The fact that I made it. I feel really good for 100. Sometimes I have more energy than others — but I never wake up in a bad mood. I feel like I’m about 13.”

His positive outlook has roots in personal choices and the relationships he values. Van Dyke explained that observing his father succumb to anger and hate influenced his approach to life. He remarked, “I’ve always thought that anger is one thing that eats up a person’s insides — and hate. And I never really was able to work up a feeling of hate. I think that is one of the chief things that kept me going.”

Support and Joy in Relationships

A significant part of his happiness comes from his relationship with his wife, Arlene Silver, who he credits for keeping him grounded. “She’s responsible for keeping me in the moment. She kept me happy every day of my life, every day. She’s a joy,” he stated. He added that her ability to inspire him to sing and dance contributes greatly to his well-being, saying, “I’m just lucky.”

Van Dyke’s reflections resonate with many, as he embodies a spirit of resilience and joy. As he nears the milestone of 100 years, his insights on life, love, and the acceptance of mortality serve as a reminder to embrace the journey with positivity.
