Drew Barrymore Calls Early Rehab Experience Life-Changing
Drew Barrymore recently reflected on her time in a rehabilitation facility as a teenager, describing it as “the best thing that ever happened” to her. During an episode of *The Drew Barrymore Show* on October 24, 2023, the actress discussed her journey to recovery and the importance of overcoming shame, particularly in relation to her latest film, *Wayward*.
In a candid conversation with Mae Martin, Barrymore revealed that she spent two years in a treatment center starting at the age of 14. “I also was someone who got taken away and put in a place for two years,” she shared. This experience, she emphasized, played a crucial role in shaping her outlook on life. “Getting help was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she stated, highlighting the transformative nature of her rehabilitation.
Martin, who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, expressed surprise at Barrymore’s past, noting their shared experiences as troubled teens. They remarked, “I didn’t know that you were at one of those places.” This connection led to a deeper discussion about the upcoming film, *Wayward*, which focuses on two teenagers attending a school for troubled youth. Barrymore explained that the film draws inspiration from Martin’s childhood friend, Nicole, who experienced life in a similar program.
The duo praised the authenticity of the portrayal of such institutions in the film, with Barrymore affirming that Martin’s depiction resonated with her own experiences. “It was too real for me in that element where I knew there was no way you weren’t telling an authentic perspective,” she said.
As the conversation progressed, Martin shared their protective feelings towards young people facing similar struggles today. They remarked, “I feel so protective of young people and having had that experience of being pathologized at a very young age.” This sentiment struck a chord with Barrymore, who noted that despite the serious subject matter, watching *Wayward* is not a heavy experience.
Barrymore also reflected on her emotional challenges, particularly a breakdown she experienced at 40. She expressed optimism about her current state, stating that life has improved significantly. “We pull ourselves up, hopefully, and we find people that encourage us to tell the truth,” she said. Barrymore emphasized that the shame associated with past behaviors can be crippling, but recovery can bring lightness.
“I know that sounds wild, but it was encouragement to say your truths, to be brave, to find humor and heroism in your journey,” Barrymore explained. She elaborated that her time in rehab, while difficult, ultimately provided her with valuable lessons about resilience and self-acceptance.
Barrymore has been open about her turbulent childhood in previous interviews, noting the chaotic environment she grew up in. “My mom had a very colorful cast of characters coming through,” she recalled, describing her upbringing as whimsical yet lacking in safety. Despite these challenges, she views her unconventional childhood as a shaping experience rather than a loss.
Reflecting on the rebelliousness that often accompanies youth, Barrymore shared insights about the importance of boundaries. “The whole concept of ‘no’ made me really rebellious,” she stated, recognizing that limits can provide essential safety and care for young individuals.
For those who may be struggling with substance abuse or related issues, Barrymore’s story serves as a reminder of the potential for recovery and growth. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration offers support through its National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP.
Drew Barrymore’s journey from a troubled youth to a successful actress and advocate for mental health continues to inspire many, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit.
