Google Enhances Security for Accounts and Messages with New Features

Google has introduced new security features designed to bolster protection for users of both Google Messages and standard Google accounts. These enhancements aim not only to safeguard user data but also to assist individuals who may find themselves locked out of their accounts.
Trusted Contacts Simplify Account Recovery
The Trusted Contacts feature allows users to designate specific friends or family members who can assist in regaining access to a locked Google account. When a user is locked out, they can send a verification code to their selected trusted contacts. These contacts will then receive an email or notification prompting them to confirm the identity of the user by validating the code provided. This system ensures that while trusted contacts can assist, they do not have direct access to the account itself. Setting up Trusted Contacts is straightforward and can be initiated through the Google account settings.
Enhanced Security Features in Google Messages
In addition to account security, Google Messages has rolled out two new features aimed at enhancing user safety: safer links and Key Verifier. The safer links feature alerts users when they click on links within messages that are suspected to be spam or harmful. This proactive measure aims to reduce the likelihood of users inadvertently visiting malicious sites. Notably, the warning will only appear unless users explicitly mark a message as “not spam.” This feature is now available globally to all users of Google Messages.
The Key Verifier feature further strengthens the security of conversations by allowing users to scan a QR code from their trusted contacts. This process ensures that end-to-end encrypted messages are exchanged securely, confirming that the intended recipient is indeed the correct person. Google has announced that Key Verifier is now accessible to all users on devices running Android 10 and above, with plans for additional security measures based on this feature in the future.
These updates reflect Google’s ongoing commitment to user security and privacy. By implementing these features, the company aims to provide a safer digital experience for its users. Individuals interested in these new security measures can begin exploring them immediately through their Google accounts and Messages app.
