Queer Supernatural Anime Gains Popularity with Unique Themes

The realm of anime is experiencing a surge in supernatural series that prominently feature queer themes. Two new dramas, The Summer Hikaru Died and This Monster Wants to Eat Me, explore complex narratives centered around love between humans and monsters, capturing attention for their unique storytelling and emotional depth.
In The Summer Hikaru Died, protagonist Yoshiki Tsujinaka is faced with a heart-wrenching dilemma: he must either destroy a demonic entity that has taken on the appearance of his deceased friend, Hikaru, or allow it to continue existing in a twisted form of companionship. This choice unleashes a series of horrifying events as yokai, supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore, invade their quiet countryside town. The series deftly navigates the complexities of grief and identity, as Yoshiki grapples with his feelings for both the monster and the boy he lost.
The show does not shy away from exploring the emotional violence that queer individuals often face in society. Yoshiki’s conservative parents embody the pressures of heteronormativity, presenting an ever-present challenge for queer youth who struggle with their identities. The juxtaposition of supernatural horror and the more mundane horrors of emotional repression creates a compelling narrative that resonates with viewers.
In a similar vein, This Monster Wants to Eat Me follows the story of Hinako, a high school student who, after a tragic loss, finds solace in the depths of the ocean. Rescued by a mysterious girl named Shiori, who is revealed to be a mermaid, Hinako’s journey spirals into an exploration of desire and identity. Shiori, intent on keeping Hinako safe from other yokai, harbors a darker motive: her longing to consume Hinako as a means of connection and fulfillment.
This series not only weaves a narrative rich in supernatural elements but also explores themes of forbidden romance, drawing parallels to classic literary works such as Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. The underlying message of love intertwined with danger adds layers to the character dynamics, presenting a refreshing take on the horror genre.
While platforms like Netflix have been more reserved in embracing overt queerness in their anime offerings, Crunchyroll has fully embraced this trend. The company promotes these series with engaging marketing that highlights their unique themes and characters, such as Hinako being referred to as A5 wagyu human in promotional materials.
As audiences continue to seek authentic representation, the emergence of these queer narratives in anime is increasingly significant. Other upcoming titles, such as I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day, promise to expand this trend further. The series Sanda also hints at deeper connections between its characters, showcasing the growing interest in complex emotional relationships within the anime landscape.
The success of these shows underlines the importance of inclusion in storytelling. By integrating queer themes into supernatural narratives, creators are not merely diversifying the genre; they are enriching it. These stories delve into grief, identity, and love in ways that challenge conventional norms, ultimately making anime more resonant and relatable.
In a medium often criticized for repetitive plots, the rise of such innovative storytelling is a breath of fresh air. By presenting tales that resonate on an emotional level and challenge societal expectations, these series highlight the potential of anime to captivate a diverse audience. In a genre where monsters typically embody fear, these new narratives invite viewers to embrace their complexities and find beauty in the unconventional.
