Saints Row Developer Plans Potential Prequel Game
A potential revival of the beloved Saints Row video game franchise is on the horizon, as original design director Chris Stockman has been tasked by Embracer Group to develop a pitch for a new game. This development comes after the franchise’s recent reboot did not resonate with fans, leaving many questioning the future of this iconic series.
The Saints Row franchise emerged in the mid-2000s as a competitor to the highly successful Grand Theft Auto series. While Rockstar Games focused on expansive open worlds and serious narratives, Saints Row carved its niche by emphasizing gang culture and offering a more eccentric and humorous experience. The series expanded with notable entries such as Saints Row II and Saints Row: The Third, both of which maintained a focus on gang dynamics. However, the franchise took a significant turn with Saints Row IV, where players encountered alien invaders and superpowers after a fictional character ascended to the presidency.
Following mixed reception to the reboot, which many fans felt departed too far from the series’ roots, Volition, the original developer, faced significant challenges. The reboot failed to capture the interest of both new and longtime fans, resulting in a decline for the franchise that many believed could be terminal.
In a recent interview, Stockman expressed his disappointment with the reboot and shared his vision for a return to form. He suggested setting the prequel in the 1970s, allowing the narrative to explore the origins of the Saints Row universe. His call for creative direction was surprisingly met by Embracer Group, signaling a renewed interest in the franchise.
Stockman is now working to reunite former collaborators to create a compelling pitch for a new game that stays true to the series’ foundational elements. Embracer Group previously indicated that Saints Row would continue without Volition, but details on this new direction remained unclear until now.
The success of Stockman’s pitch hinges on Embracer Group’s approval, following past discussions about a potential Saints Row V. Those ideas ultimately shifted towards the reboot, which was heavily influenced by executive decisions that many believe contributed to its shortcomings.
As fans await further announcements, the prospect of a new Saints Row game offers a glimmer of hope for those who long for the franchise’s signature blend of action and humor. The gaming community is eager to see how Stockman’s vision unfolds and whether it can reclaim the spirit that made the series a favorite among players.
