Stephen Amell Reveals Ambitious Plans for Cancelled Heels Season 3
Actor Stephen Amell recently discussed his vision for a potential third season of the wrestling drama Heels, which was officially canceled in September 2023. The show, which premiered on Starz in August 2021, garnered critical acclaim, achieving a remarkable 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It focused on the intense dynamics between brothers Jack and Ace Spade, set against the backdrop of a small-town wrestling promotion in Duffy, Georgia.
During a panel at the Motor City Comic Con, Amell shared insights into what might have been had the series continued. “I think it would have been great to do four or five seasons of the show,” he commented. He revealed that showrunner Mike O’Malley had envisioned a significant time jump for the third season, with Jack Spade moving on to the “big leagues” of professional wrestling.
The first two seasons primarily revolved around Duffy, but Amell indicated that the storytelling would have expanded beyond the small town. He noted, “I think that overall, the idea with my character, with Jack, is that he eventually gets to the big leagues, so he eventually does get out of Duffy.” This shift would allow for a broader exploration of the wrestling world, diverging from the show’s initial tight-knit community focus.
Despite its cancellation, there remains a glimmer of hope for a revival. Following the addition of Heels to Netflix, there has been a resurgence of interest in the series. The streaming platform has become the global home for WWE content, airing shows like WWE Raw, which could make Heels a natural fit for viewers.
Amell and O’Malley have expressed optimism regarding the series’ potential return. Amell’s remarks align with O’Malley’s previous statements about the narrative direction, particularly Jack’s struggles with an injury sustained in the show’s final episode. Writer Michael Waldron, known for his work on Avengers: Doomsday, also weighed in on the likelihood of a revival, suggesting that the series could find a second life if it attracts a dedicated audience on streaming platforms.
As fans continue to rally for the show’s return, Amell’s reflections on the future of Heels highlight a shared passion among cast and crew for the series’ potential. The show’s unique blend of family drama and the world of professional wrestling captured the hearts of its viewers, making its cancellation all the more poignant.
While no concrete steps have been announced for a revival, the enthusiasm surrounding the series remains strong, fueled in part by its newfound availability on Netflix. As discussions about a possible third season continue, fans hold onto hope that the story of Jack and Ace Spade might not be over just yet.
