Local Surgeon Leads Free Workshop on Breast Cancer Awareness
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a free virtual workshop focused on breast cancer prevention will take place on October 27, from 19:00 to 20:00 (UTC). The event, titled “Beyond the Pink Ribbon: Breast Cancer Facts, Prevention & Community Action,” will be led by Alicia Silva, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon specializing in breast surgery at Sutter Health in Davis and a board director with Thriving Pink.
The presentation aims to provide the community with updated statistics on breast cancer, practical prevention tips, and actionable strategies for supporting both breast cancer survivors and ongoing prevention efforts.
Empowering the Community Through Knowledge
Dr. Silva’s experience includes previous educational engagements, such as talks for the Ventanilla de Salud at the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento. Her dual role as a surgeon and leader within Thriving Pink positions her uniquely to convey essential information on breast cancer, as emphasized by Leslie Hunter, executive director of Thriving Pink.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink—it’s about empowering our community with knowledge and tools to make a real impact,” Hunter stated. The workshop is designed to equip participants with evidence-based information on reducing breast cancer risk and actionable steps to support the breast cancer community in Yolo County.
How to Participate
The virtual workshop is open to the public and forms part of Thriving Pink’s PINKtober initiative, which includes various events throughout the month aimed at raising awareness, providing education, and fostering community support for individuals affected by breast cancer.
Interested participants can register for the workshop by visiting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87917038340. For more information about Thriving Pink and its initiatives, individuals can visit www.thrivingpink.org or contact them via email at [email protected].
This workshop represents a significant opportunity for community engagement and education, reinforcing the importance of proactive measures in the fight against breast cancer.
