Recent food safety inspections in Montgomery County have uncovered significant violations at several local establishments, prompting concerns over public health and safety. Conducted during the week of October 5-11, 2025, the inspections were carried out by the Montgomery County Office of Public Health (MCOPH) and identified issues such as the use of expired food products and unclean conditions in food storage areas.

According to the MCOPH, all food and drink establishments are inspected annually. Additional inspections may follow if an establishment fails to meet compliance standards or receives complaints. Inspections provide a “snapshot” of compliance, and many violations are corrected immediately. However, the recurrence of certain issues raises questions about long-term food safety practices.

Key Violations Identified

Among the establishments inspected, Ricos Tacos in Norristown was cited for multiple infractions, including the improper storage of raw shelled eggs above beverages and the lack of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM). The facility was given five business days to rectify these issues.

Another notable case was Nanu’s Hot Chicken in Ardmore, which also lacked a CFPM and failed to implement written procedures for responding to vomiting and diarrheal events. The establishment was advised to apply for certification promptly to avoid potential legal action.

The inspections revealed that La Poblita Mexican Cuisine & Bar in Norristown had moldy bread in storage and a lack of proper date marking for shellstock tags, leading to concerns about food safety. The facility was given ten business days to address these issues, including proof of professional pest control treatment due to observed insect activity.

In a separate inspection, El Super Taco was found operating without a valid MCOPH license, which is required for food service establishments in the county. The facility was instructed to submit its license application within three business days.

Health Implications and Compliance Measures

The MCOPH emphasizes the importance of compliance with health regulations to ensure public safety. Facilities are required to have adequate handwashing facilities, maintain proper food storage temperatures, and implement effective pest management strategies. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to severe repercussions, including fines and legal action.

The inspections also highlighted critical issues such as heavy ice buildup in freezers, which can compromise food safety by preventing proper temperature control. For instance, KFC-Taco Bell in Royersford was cited for significant ice accumulation, indicating a failure to maintain equipment properly.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve food safety standards, the MCOPH encourages the public to report any concerns regarding food safety practices or illnesses that may arise from dining experiences. Establishments are expected to promptly address any violations and ensure compliance with health codes.
