Shamea Morton Files Lawsuit Over Chemical Peel Injury
Shamea Morton, a prominent television personality, has initiated legal action against a cosmetic clinic, alleging severe skin damage from a chemical peel treatment. The incident occurred in March 2023 at Pretty Faces Atlanta, where Morton claims the procedure was improperly administered, resulting in lasting injury.
Morton asserts that the chemical peel was “negligently and recklessly applied” by employee Lauren M. Davis, who reportedly used double the recommended amount of the chemical solution. This misapplication allegedly led to second-degree chemical burns and permanent scarring. According to court documents, the manufacturer of the chemical peel explicitly warns that such treatments pose a significant risk of skin discoloration for individuals with darker skin tones.
The complaint details that Morton experienced significant pain during the procedure, prompting Dr. Jing Jing Wong Harris, the owner of Pretty Faces Atlanta, to intervene. It is noted that he had not entered the room prior to this incident. Following the treatment, Morton’s skin reportedly exhibited severe peeling and discoloration.
In her lawsuit, Morton highlights her pre-existing skin condition, tinea versicolor, which causes discolored patches on the skin and can be exacerbated by heat or hormonal changes. She contends that the clinic staff failed to recognize this condition and should have referred her to a qualified dermatologist instead. None of the employees at Pretty Faces Atlanta are dermatologists; they specialize in aesthetic procedures.
Morton’s case underscores the importance of proper training and adherence to safety protocols in cosmetic procedures. The incident has drawn attention not only for its serious implications but also for the potential risks associated with chemical peels, particularly for patients with specific skin types.
The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant ramifications for cosmetic clinics and their practices regarding patient safety and informed consent. As Morton seeks accountability for her injuries, this case raises critical discussions about the standards of care within the aesthetic industry.
In light of the ongoing legal proceedings, Morton’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for individuals considering similar treatments, emphasizing the necessity of thorough consultations and understanding the risks involved.
