Bob’s Bags Delivers Essential Support to Duncanville’s Homeless

Bob’s Bags, a community initiative based in Duncanville, has been providing essential support to the homeless population in Dallas County for nearly seven years. Founded by Bob Cawthon, a member of the First Christian Church of Duncanville, the program has grown from a simple act of kindness—a 10-cent bottle of water—into a comprehensive outreach effort that serves hundreds of individuals in need.

The mission of Bob’s Bags is succinctly described on their website: “to extend a hand of compassion and support to individuals experiencing homelessness, providing them with essential supplies and a sense of dignity.” The initiative aims to offer not only physical assistance but also emotional support, sharing a message of hope and faith with those they serve.

Growing Impact Through Community Support

What began as a small effort has blossomed into a robust program, thanks in large part to the support of the local community. Cawthon has enlisted the help of family, friends, and church members, creating a network of volunteers dedicated to the cause. On any given Thursday, over thirty volunteers gather to prepare for distributions, exemplifying the community’s commitment to helping those less fortunate.

During a recent packing event, volunteers sorted and assembled 100 bags filled with vital items such as water, food, personal care products, blankets, and clothing. The program is particularly mindful of the needs of women, ensuring their bags contain specific personal care items. Such detailed attention to individual needs highlights the compassion driving Bob’s Bags.

Volunteers from various local organizations, including scout groups and civic associations, frequently join the effort. Jim Lackey, a local supporter, noted the warmth and dedication of the community in embracing this outreach mission.

Distribution and Connection

Once the bags are packed, Cawthon and other volunteers actively seek out individuals in need, often visiting areas where homeless individuals are known to congregate. They travel in a caravan of five large SUVs, prepared to distribute supplies that may include warm clothes, rain gear, sleeping bags, and tents. This hands-on approach emphasizes the importance of personal interaction, as Cawthon explained: “We love having conversations with them, enjoying fellowship and praying with them, or just being a friend.”

In addition to the physical supplies, Bob’s Bags also provides information about local services available to those experiencing homelessness. This holistic approach ensures that assistance extends beyond immediate needs, offering a pathway to longer-term support.

The outreach efforts are not limited to just basic necessities. During their October distribution, volunteers assisted 120 men and women, with ages ranging from 21 to 81. They provided bags filled with personal care items, tents, sleeping bags, and even 120 sausage biscuits to those in need. In addition, they distributed 526 articles of clothing and 45 pairs of shoes, demonstrating the program’s commitment to addressing urgent needs.

As winter approaches, Bob’s Bags is planning additional outreach events. The next distribution is scheduled for November 29, just after Thanksgiving. This event will focus on providing warm clothing, including hoodies, jackets, gloves, and hats, along with sleeping bags and tents as supplies allow.

Volunteers are also preparing for a December outreach on the 28th, when average temperatures in the area can drop to between 38 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a pressing need for outdoor footwear, larger jackets, and other warm clothing to ensure the comfort of those living outdoors during the colder months.
