Celebrating Frederick L. Maytag: A Legacy of Community Impact
A newly published biography sheds light on the life and contributions of Frederick L. Maytag, an influential figure in the history of Newton, Iowa. Authored by Dr. Tom Hoover, the book titled *Maytag Memories* spans 292 pages and is a testament to Maytag’s significant impact on the community. Readers can explore the rich history of Maytag Park, notable buildings, and the legacy of generosity left behind by the Maytag family.
Maytag Park is a focal point of the biography, featuring ten dedicated pages that delve into its origins. The park, previously the Jasper County Fairgrounds, was purchased by Frederick L. Maytag in 1935 after the fair relocated to Colfax. A photograph from September 1935 captures Ronald “Dutch” Reagan, then a sports caster for Radio Station WHO in Des Moines, serving as the Master of Ceremonies during a park event. The park’s development required the efforts of over 100 workers who transformed the area into a vibrant space complete with shelter houses and the iconic Maytag Bowl.
The book also highlights the historical significance of other contributions from the Maytag family. Notably, the $250,000 YMCA building that opened in downtown Newton in 1927 and the $180,000 Salvation Army Citadel established in 1928 both reflect the family’s commitment to community welfare. These structures, although replaced in recent years, remain integral to Newton’s historical narrative.
In addition to their philanthropy, the Maytag family was known for their progressive employment practices. Employees were often rewarded with above-average wages and some of the first insurance plans in the United States. A remarkable anecdote from the 1920s recounts how every employee with three or more years of service received a surprise gift of $500, a fact remembered fondly by local resident Harry Rosenberger, who also contributed to the construction of the Maytag Hotel in 1926.
Dr. Hoover’s biography, *Farm Fields to Beverly Hills*, is filled with captivating stories and photographs that celebrate the legacy of Frederick L. Maytag. It serves as a vital resource for those interested in local history and the development of Newton. For readers looking to explore this rich narrative, copies are available at the Newton Library, promising a rewarding read that connects past and present.
The contributions of Frederick L. Maytag continue to resonate in the community today, reminding residents of the importance of generosity, progress, and a commitment to enhancing the lives of others.
