The Community Thread’s Holiday Hope program in Stillwater is preparing for a significant increase in demand as the festive season approaches. The initiative aims to provide new and unwrapped gifts for children from birth to grade 12 who are facing financial difficulties within the Stillwater Area School District. This year, the program has expanded its reach, incorporating families from previously excluded areas, enhancing its support for the local community.

As of December 1, 2023, over 300 families have registered for the Holiday Hope program, marking a notable surge in participation. According to Cathleen Hess, the director of development and communications at Community Thread, the current economic climate is prompting many families to seek assistance. “With everything happening in the world right now and in this country… I think people are feeling a squeeze,” she remarked. Hess emphasized the community’s willingness to help, stating, “The St. Croix Valley typically steps up when they’re able, when there’s a need.”

In 2024, Holiday Hope achieved a remarkable milestone by serving 3,013 individuals, including 1,723 children. This record number reflects the increasing necessity for such programs in the region. Community Thread is actively collecting new and unwrapped gifts valued at $15 or more, with suggestions including toys, age-appropriate books, arts and crafts kits, science kits, room decor for teens, Lego sets, and sports memorabilia.

This year, the program is adapting its support for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Instead of distributing gift cards and holiday meals, Holiday Hope will provide Cub grocery gift cards alongside grocery products to participants in the organization’s Thrive Program. This initiative specifically targets older adults and adults with disabilities who are eligible for free or reduced-priced memberships, allowing them to access essential items during the holiday season.

Community Thread encourages the public to contribute by dropping off donations at its main office or any local Holiday Hope Collection Site by December 12. The organization aims to foster a spirit of generosity and support within the community, ensuring that those in need experience joy during the festive period.
