Community Unites to Honor Veterans with Wreaths on December 13

The annual National Wreaths Across America Day is set for noon on December 13, 2023, aiming to honor every veteran buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township and two cemeteries in New Baltimore. Community support is essential to achieve the goal of placing wreaths on the graves of approximately 9,000 veterans. The Clinton Township Kiwanis Club is spearheading the initiative at Resurrection Cemetery, while the New Baltimore Lions Club is involved in the ceremonies at their local sites.
The significance of wreaths lies in their symbolism. Traditionally, wreaths represent eternal life, victory, and remembrance. Their circular shape signifies eternity, particularly resonating with those of faith. Additionally, the use of evergreens in wreath-making signifies resilience.
The core mission of Wreaths Across America is encapsulated in their motto: “Remember, Honor, and Teach.” Ceremonies will occur at more than 5,200 locations across the United States, including Arlington National Cemetery. Last year alone, over three million wreaths were placed nationwide, underscoring the event’s widespread impact.
Local participation is highlighted by Mitchell Pennington, a captain in the Michigan Air National Guard and resident of New Baltimore, who has taken part in the ceremonies for several years. He emphasizes the emotional weight of the event, stating, “The mission is to remember, honor, and teach current generations about the sacrifices of those who have gone before us.”
Pennington reflects on the personal connections many have with the veterans. “We may not personally know everyone involved, but someone in the community likely has a relative who experienced loss in service. It’s vital they know their loved one’s sacrifice is not forgotten,” he adds. He notes the importance of community engagement in honoring veterans and recognizing the high cost of freedom.
The ceremony will take place on December 13, beginning at St. Mary’s Cemetery at 36105 24 Mile Road and Oakwood Cemetery at 35900 24 Mile Road. Activities include a procession led by the New Baltimore Police Department at 11:30 a.m., followed by the wreath-laying ceremony at noon. Organizers anticipate placing over 900 wreaths during this event.
To support the wreath-laying initiative, a fundraising pasta dinner is scheduled for November 13 at the VFW Lempke-Blackwell Post 7573. The dinner will run from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with good-will donations accepted for a meal that includes pasta, salad, and dessert. Attendees can also participate in fifty-fifty drawings at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Community members can purchase wreaths for $17. Additional sponsorship opportunities are available, including options for families and businesses. For example, five wreaths can be sponsored for $85, while larger groups can choose packages ranging from $425 for 25 wreaths to $1,700 for 100 wreaths. Orders can be placed online at the official Wreaths Across America site.
At Resurrection Cemetery, the goal is to honor all 9,000 veterans. Organizer Lori Stillwell highlights the need for volunteers, particularly for flag placement ceremonies scheduled for November 15. “We meet at 2:00 p.m. to place 1,400 flags,” she states, emphasizing the communal spirit behind the initiative.
The Knights of Columbus are also involved, taking orders until November 9 for evergreen grave decorations. Their offerings include wreaths and grave blankets, with proceeds directed to charities supporting veterans.
For those interested in contributing, numerous options for sponsorship and donations are available to ensure no veteran is forgotten. For more information, community coordinators Mario Jimenez and Jason Whitus can be contacted at 586-307-2563 and 787-375-0307, respectively.
As the wreath-laying event approaches, the community is reminded of the profound significance of honoring those who served, reinforcing the values of remembrance and respect during the holiday season.
