Dog Naming Trends of 2025 Reveal Popular Picks and Inspirations
The latest report on dog names for 2025 reveals shifting trends influenced by pop culture and social media. According to data from the online pet supply retailer Chewy, certain names have emerged as favorites among dog owners, showcasing how trends can evolve over time. Ciara Lavelle, a pet expert at Chewy, provided insights into these naming patterns based on user profiles submitted when registering new pets.
This year, the top dog names for both male and female dogs include familiar favorites: Bella, Luna, Daisy, Lucy, Max, Charlie, Bailey, Cooper, Buddy, and Sadie. Beyond these popular choices, names like Cheeto, Brisket, and Elphaba have gained traction, reflecting a broader trend in dog naming.
Food and Pop Culture Influence Dog Names
Lavelle noted a significant rise in food-inspired names this year, with some seeing impressive increases in popularity. For instance, the name Cheeto and Pickles both rose by approximately 25% since 2024, while Brisket surged by an astonishing 68%. The recent success of the film “Wicked,” released in November 2024, has also inspired many dog owners. The name Elphaba, referring to the Wicked Witch of the West, has increased in popularity by 200%, accompanied by its nickname, Elphie. Similarly, Glinda, the Good Witch, saw a growth of 175% this year.
Pop culture continues to play a significant role in naming trends. Lavelle highlighted a 15% increase in dogs named Ozzy, paying tribute to the late musician Ozzy Osbourne. Additionally, the popular series “The White Lotus” influenced dog names, with the name Piper seeing a 33% increase, likely inspired by a memorable meme from the show’s last season.
Choosing the Right Name for Your Dog
Selecting a name for a dog can be a challenging but rewarding task. Lavelle emphasized that potential owners should consider their pet’s personality and appearance, as well as their own interests in movies or music when deciding on a name. For those seeking additional inspiration, the American Kennel Club offers a list of unique and classic names, including options like Storm, JoJo, Scout, Zeke, Kona, and Jax.
It is essential to remember that a dog’s name will be frequently heard in public settings, such as parks or veterinary offices. Lavelle advised future pet owners to choose names that they feel comfortable saying aloud, highlighting the importance of selecting a name that resonates with them and is respectful.
Ultimately, Lavelle reassured pet owners that regardless of the name chosen, their dog will appreciate it because it represents the bond between them. “No matter what you choose, your dog will love it, because it’s how they’ll be called by their favorite person,” she stated. As trends evolve, the names that define our furry companions will continue to reflect the world around us.
