Local Leaders Share Gratitude Ahead of Thanksgiving 2025
As Thanksgiving approaches, leaders from Anne Arundel County, Maryland, reflect on their experiences and express gratitude for significant milestones throughout 2025. The year has been marked by competitive elections, community initiatives, and personal achievements, prompting local newsmakers to share what they are thankful for as the holiday season begins.
Community Leaders Reflect on Accomplishments
Janice Allsup-Johnson, the newly elected alderman for Ward 4, expressed her appreciation for the support she received during her campaign. “I am thankful that I was able to complete my journey and win this Ward 4 election,” she stated. Allsup-Johnson highlighted her family’s involvement, particularly her great-grandson, who walked neighborhoods with her throughout the election process. She also conveyed gratitude for her friends and church community.
Outgoing alderman Ross Arnett of Annapolis’ Ward 8 highlighted the importance of community support, stating, “I’m thankful for all of the wonderful neighbors in Eastport.” He acknowledged the close-knit relationship with his siblings, despite being apart for Thanksgiving, stating, “We’ll be talking to each other.”
Police Chief Amal Awad emphasized the value of teamwork and community appreciation. “I’m grateful for my family and the entire department,” she noted, recognizing the commitment of her officers and their connection to the community.
Education and Community Development
Mark Bedell, the superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, shared his gratitude for family support in his demanding role. “They provide a safe haven for me in a job that can be very stressful,” he said. He expressed appreciation for the strong team of educators and the supportive school board he has worked with during his tenure.
Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley reflected on his eight years in office, expressing gratitude for the city’s achievements, including the groundbreaking of a new waterfront park. “I’m grateful that we broke ground on what will be a new waterfront park that everyone in Annapolis can enjoy for future generations,” he remarked.
State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess shared her personal joys, including her family’s health and her son’s upcoming college graduation. She also highlighted the charitable efforts of her staff, noting their support for over 134 families during the past year.
In a heartfelt message, Ed Jackson, Chief of Annapolis Police Department, expressed his gratitude for another year of life, his family, and his health. He also acknowledged the department’s progress in reducing crime and solving a 37-year-old cold case, stating, “I’m grateful for the men and women of the Annapolis Police Department.”
Local Businesses and Community Spirit
Local business owners also shared their gratitude. Steuart Pittman, Anne Arundel County executive, emphasized the resilience of community members. “I am thankful that despite all the chaos and trauma that human beings inflict on one another, our instincts still drive us to seek understanding and peace,” he said.
The Wang family, owners of Sandy Pony Donuts, expressed appreciation for their loyal customers. “I’m thankful for friends, family, and all of our customers,” said Ben Wang, while his wife Brea added, “I’m thankful for my two great kids, their teachers, and our loyal customers.”
As the community prepares for Thanksgiving, these reflections highlight a shared sense of gratitude amid the challenges and triumphs of 2025. Local leaders, educators, and business owners alike recognize the importance of family, community, and the bonds that unite them as they celebrate the holiday season.
