Minneapolis Shelter Extends Hours Amid Frigid Weekend Temperatures
As temperatures plummet this weekend, the Catholic Charities Higher Ground Minneapolis shelter is extending its hours to provide a warm refuge for those in need. The shelter, located at 165 Glenwood Ave in Minneapolis, will operate continuously from 10 a.m. on March 16 until 10 a.m. on March 18, 2024, offering support during dangerously cold conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings about the extreme cold gripping the region. Wind chill values are expected to drop to between -15 and -30 degrees Fahrenheit during the night and could reach as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit by Sunday evening. Such conditions pose serious health risks, with frostbite possible on exposed skin within just ten minutes.
In response to the severe weather, the Higher Ground shelter typically opens from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. daily but will extend its operations to include daytime hours this weekend. Shelter staff will provide hot meals, showers, and cold-weather essentials to those seeking shelter.
A spokesperson for the shelter emphasized the importance of these extended hours, stating, “Our goal is to ensure that everyone has a safe place to stay during this extreme weather.” The initiative aims to protect vulnerable individuals and families from the life-threatening cold.
The NWS shared on their X account, “These dangerously cold conditions can lead to serious health risks. Stay warm and limit time outdoors.” The forecast has prompted heightened awareness in the community as residents prepare for the harsh temperatures.
In addition to the shelter’s extended hours, local organizations and volunteers are mobilizing to assist those affected by the cold. Efforts include distributing blankets, warm clothing, and food to those in need throughout the city.
The Higher Ground shelter’s decision to remain open during the day reflects a growing recognition of the challenges posed by winter weather, particularly for homeless populations. As the community rallies to support its most vulnerable members, the focus remains on ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to stay safe.
