New Braunfels Group Aims to Bring Joy to Young Adults at Christmas
A community initiative in New Braunfels, Texas, is working diligently to ensure that young adults with disabilities experience a memorable Christmas. The founder of Decade Day Service, Jonathan Fraley, along with his cousin and volunteer Colton Floyd, is aiming to collect gifts, sensory items, and celebration supplies for approximately 17 to 20 participants in their program.
Fraley expressed his commitment to the participants, stating, “Above all, they’re just a tight group of friends, and they deserve the world. The kindest hearts. The most giving, caring people that I know.” This year, the group is striving to provide a different experience for many of the young adults, who typically reside in group homes where donated gifts are common.
Changing the Gift-Giving Experience
Floyd highlighted the need for change in their gift-giving approach. “A lot of these kids come from group homes. And a lot of their presents are just donated, and they never really get to pick their presents. This year, that’s what we’re going to change.” The aim is to allow these young adults to choose their gifts, thereby enhancing their holiday experience.
Beyond the Christmas season, Fraley noted that financial support is vital for sustaining the group’s activities throughout the year. The outings include trips to Morgan’s Wonderland, bowling, gym sessions, movies, and various community events. “We eat together, we go shopping together, we play disc golf together,” he said. “We do everything.”
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
With the holiday season quickly approaching, Decade Day Service is nearing its fundraising goal but is still seeking assistance from the community. They have established a GoFundMe page to facilitate this effort. Floyd emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “It’s important to let them know other people are thinking about them.”
The initiative not only aims to provide gifts but also to foster a sense of belonging and normalcy for participants. “We just try to give them the most normal life that we can,” Floyd added. As the group strives to create a joyful and inclusive Christmas, they invite individuals and organizations to contribute to this meaningful cause.
