Dozens of children from Pottawattamie County kicked off the holiday season with joy and excitement during the annual Shop with the Sheriff event at Metro Crossing Target on November 15, 2025. This cherished tradition pairs local youth with law enforcement officers to shop for gifts, fostering community connections and holiday cheer.

The event saw children aged 9 to 13 eagerly engaging in holiday shopping. Each participant received a budget of $175 to purchase clothing, shoes, and toys for themselves and their families. Throughout the morning, they navigated the aisles alongside deputies from the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, who provided assistance and encouragement.

Children like Michaelene Tonche and Nadia Neach-Kelso took part in the festivities, chatting with Santa Claus and enjoying the festive atmosphere. Notably, Shirley Diaz, aged 8, brought a playful spirit to the event by pushing a shopping cart with a representation of the Grinch, embodying the light-hearted joy of the season.

The Shop with the Sheriff event not only serves as a holiday shopping spree but also strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the community. Sheriff Jeff Danker emphasized the importance of such interactions, stating, “This event brings smiles to faces and helps create lasting relationships between the community and our deputies.”

The event also includes a thoughtful initiative where staff from the Sheriff’s Office buy clothes and toys for younger children who cannot shop themselves. This year marked a significant milestone, as the event celebrated its 25th anniversary, having expanded its reach and impact over the years.

As the morning unfolded, excitement filled the air as children tried on clothes and explored toy aisles. Officers assisted with selections, ensuring each child found items that brought them joy. The community’s support was evident, with many families participating in this heartwarming occasion.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office continues to foster community spirit through events like Shop with the Sheriff, which not only provide material support but also build goodwill and understanding between local law enforcement and residents.

As families made their way to checkout, the laughter and camaraderie shared between the children and deputies resonated with the true spirit of the holiday season. The event is a reminder of the joy of giving, connection, and community support as the year draws to a close.
