Sara Jewett Takes Helm as Principal at Lee Elementary

Sara Jewett has stepped into her new role as principal at Lee Elementary in Thornapple Kellogg, bringing with her extensive experience in elementary education. Jewett, who previously worked for 15 years at Otsego Public Schools, is eager to foster a nurturing environment that emphasizes individualized support for students.
“We have top-notch teachers here,” Jewett stated. “Every teacher in this building is here for the kids, and we really individualize support and learning for each grade level.” Her passion for education and commitment to student engagement were evident as she expressed her enjoyment of interacting with students, especially during lunch, where she feels their true personalities shine through. “Lunch is when I see all their authentic personalities that come out when you just sit down and talk to them,” she added.
Professional Background and Educational Path
Jewett’s journey in education began with significant challenges in securing a position right after college. However, her perseverance paid off, leading her to Otsego, where she taught fifth and first grades, and served as a Title 1 teacher and instructional coach. In the past year, she pursued an administrator certification, opening the door for her transition into leadership roles within TK Schools.
Her educational qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in education technology, both from Grand Valley State University. Jewett’s decision to become an administrator stemmed from a desire for new challenges and growth. “I’ve always wanted to take on a leadership role, and the timing felt right,” she explained, reflecting on her mentor’s early encouragement to consider the principal position.
Community and Leadership Approach
Jewett’s choice to join TK Schools was deliberate. Having enjoyed her previous role, she approached this opportunity with caution and intention. During her interview process for the principal role at Lee Elementary, she noted a strong sense of teamwork among the administration and staff, describing it as having a “real team” atmosphere that contributed to the “family feel” she values.
At home, Jewett shares a busy life with her husband, Jake, who teaches middle school social studies. Together, they manage their three children, Hannah, Jane, and Connor, all of whom attend school in Otsego. “We’re a super busy family, managing multiple different sports and practices,” she remarked. “We like to go camping in our new camper and spent the majority of our summer at the beach.”
Jewett describes her leadership style as “servant leadership,” emphasizing the importance of meeting both students’ and teachers’ needs. “Support is huge, and it’s important to work as a team,” she noted, ensuring that decisions are made collaboratively. “I’m not going to make decisions on my own and try to poke all the holes in decisions to see it from all perspectives.”
In her personal life, Jewett identifies as a dog person, reminiscing about her family’s golden retriever. She also enjoys reading, citing her affection for the book “An Awesome Book” by Dallas Clayton, which she appreciates for its messages that resonate with both children and adults. When it comes to food, she humorously admitted her love for rice, with tacos being her favorite meal.
Looking ahead, Jewett has aspirations to travel and explore the world, with dream destinations including Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia. As she begins her new role, her commitment to fostering a positive educational environment at Lee Elementary is clear, and the community looks forward to her leadership.
