STATION8 Public Market Set to Transform UCSD’s Dining Experience
A new dining destination, the STATION8 Public Market, is poised to open in August 2026 within the Theatre District of UC San Diego (UCSD) in La Jolla. Developed by Tiger Hospitality Group, this food hall aims to cater to both the university community and the general public, offering a diverse culinary experience.
The 20,000-square-foot venue will feature a two-story layout that includes globally inspired restaurant booths, two bars, and seating capacity for 312 guests. Among the amenities is a 34-seat outdoor patio, enhancing the dining experience with outdoor options. The mezzanine level will host an additional concept that is yet to be revealed, promising further variety for visitors.
Tiger Hospitality Group—composed of partners Berke Bakay, Eren Unur, and Brett Johnson—brings a wealth of experience from previous ventures, including the rebranding of a food hall in Little Italy and plans for a location in the Miramar Theatre complex in San Clemente. The group has developed several restaurant brands, such as Lobster Lab and Cosmos Burger. Notably, Bakay and Unur initially collaborated at Windmill Food Hall in Carlsbad, where they garnered valuable operational insights.
Design and Community Integration
Designed by the local firm BASILE Studio, STATION8 will occupy a prominent location in the district’s main square. This area integrates classrooms, offices, student housing, a conference center, and an underground parking garage, creating a vibrant hub for both students and the public. The open seating and flexible dining arrangements are tailored to reflect the evolving trend of food halls as community-centric spaces.
The proximity of STATION8 to the La Jolla Playhouse, which attracts over 100,000 visitors annually, positions it as a key dining destination. The market will feature ten locally based restaurant booths on the first floor, showcasing a variety of globally inspired cuisines. By focusing on local operators instead of national chains, STATION8 is set to become one of the first campus food halls in the United States to adopt this model.
The initiative not only aims to enhance the culinary landscape at UCSD but also intends to foster a sense of community among students and visitors alike. With its diverse dining options and unique atmosphere, STATION8 Public Market is positioned to become a significant addition to the Theatre District, enriching the overall experience for everyone who steps through its doors.
