Tacoma Seeks Community Volunteers for Redevelopment Board Roles
Tacoma City Council has initiated a call for community volunteers to fill six vacant positions on the Tacoma Community Redevelopment Authority (TCRA) Board. This effort aims to enhance housing and economic development in the city. The council is particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds in accounting, banking, finance, and real estate to guide essential grant and loan programs that support low-income households, multi-family housing initiatives, and local businesses.
The current board consists of five members, each possessing extensive experience in their respective fields. As their terms come to a close, they have the opportunity to reapply for another term, reflecting a commitment to ongoing community development. The board is responsible for making critical decisions that impact the economic landscape of Tacoma.
Meeting Schedule and Community Inclusion
Board meetings take place twice a month, ensuring that members can actively engage in the decision-making process. As the holiday season approaches, the meeting schedule will adjust slightly, accommodating the needs of board members. Participants can choose to attend in person or virtually, allowing flexibility in participation.
Emphasizing the city’s commitment to equity and diversity, the TCRA Board encourages applications from a wide range of candidates, including individuals from BIPOC communities, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, seniors, youth, and Tacoma’s immigrant and refugee populations. This inclusive approach aims to reflect the city’s diverse demographics and ensure that various perspectives are represented in community development efforts.
Those selected for the board will be required to undergo training on the Open Public Meetings Act and the Public Records Act, thereby enhancing their understanding of public governance and accountability.
Application Process and Deadline
Interested individuals can find more information about the TCRA, including application requirements, meeting schedules, and agendas, on the city’s official website. Elizabeth Wing from the City Clerk’s Office is available to answer any questions regarding the application process. The deadline for applications is set for November 24, providing ample time for potential candidates to prepare their submissions.
This initiative underscores Tacoma’s ongoing efforts to foster community involvement and address its evolving needs. By inviting volunteers to participate in the TCRA, the city aims to create a more robust framework for housing and economic growth, ultimately benefiting all residents.
