Union Gospel Mission Distributes 10,000 Meals for Thanksgiving
The Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities is set to provide more than 10,000 meals to families in need during this Thanksgiving holiday, marking the 68th year of its annual initiative. Amid rising food insecurity exacerbated by the recent pause in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, the mission aims to ensure that no family goes hungry this season.
Pam Stegora Axberg, CEO of the Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities, expressed concern over the increasing demand for food assistance. “We have seen community food and resource needs rise significantly over the last several months — especially with the pause in SNAP benefits during the federal government shutdown,” she stated. “This increased need is especially heartbreaking during the holidays. I’m looking forward to seeing our community come together to support their neighbors experiencing hunger and homelessness.”
Thanksgiving Meal Distribution Details
The Thanksgiving Grocery Bag Distribution will take place on November 24, 2024, from 08:00 to 18:00 at the mission’s Men’s Campus, located at 435 E. University Ave. in St. Paul. The initiative will distribute 10,000 complete meals, which includes 2,000 frozen turkeys, 14,000 pounds of potatoes, and various canned and boxed food items, all prepared with the help of over 250 volunteers.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2024, the mission will serve a traditional meal from 11:30 to 13:00 at the same location. This event creates a warm and dignified atmosphere where guests can experience comfort and belonging. “Our Thanksgiving Day events are not just about providing food – they’re about creating a meaningful and uplifting dining experience for those who may not have the opportunity to be served,” Axberg added.
Additional Food Drives in the Community
In addition to the Union Gospel Mission’s efforts, several local organizations are hosting food drives to support families this holiday season. The Linwood Recreation Center in St. Paul is currently accepting food donations for the Hallie Q. Brown Food Shelf until November 24, operating from 09:00 to 20:00. The most needed items include canned tuna, beans, rice, pasta, shelf-stable milk, baby food, and hygiene products. Donations with glass containers, alcohol, or homemade items will not be accepted.
The city of St. Paul has also initiated food drive locations since November 1, following the suspension of SNAP benefits. They are requesting donations of new, unopened, shelf-stable food and hygiene items.
Items can be dropped off during business hours at various community centers, including:
– Highland Park Community Center, 1978 Ford Parkway
– Arlington Hills Community Center, 1200 Payne Ave.
– North Dale Recreation Center, 1414 N. Albans St.
– Oxford Community Center, 270 N. Lexington Parkway
The Neighborhood House is another organization encouraging smaller donations during market hours. They operate two food market locations in St. Paul:
– Wellstone Center Food Market, 179 Robie St.
– Neighborhood House on Montreal Food Market, 1080 Montreal Ave.
For those looking to contribute, scheduling drop-offs can be arranged by contacting the Neighborhood House at 651-789-3630.
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, community members are reminded of the importance of supporting those in need. The collective efforts of local organizations highlight a commitment to ensuring that everyone can enjoy the holiday season with dignity and warmth.
