California’s Proposition 50 Campaign Intensifies in Final Days

As California approaches the election for Proposition 50, both supporters and opponents are mobilizing efforts to maximize voter turnout. This redistricting measure, which aims to adjust congressional boundaries, has sparked significant financial backing for proponents, while the opposition is focusing on engaging undecided voters in the final days leading up to the ballot.
Supporters of Prop. 50, spearheaded by Governor Gavin Newsom, report a strong lead in polls and fundraising. Hannah Milgrom, spokesperson for the Yes on 50 campaign, emphasized the importance of outreach, stating, “Polls don’t vote; people do.” The campaign aims to connect with every Californian before the voting deadline, employing strategies such as rallies, door-to-door canvassing, and targeted advertisements.
Recent polling data indicates a favorable climate for the proposition. An Emerson College survey conducted from October 20-21 revealed that 57% of likely voters support Prop. 50, with only 37% opposed. Another survey by CBS News/YouGov, conducted between October 16-21, placed support at an even higher level, with 62% in favor and 38% against. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted a shift in support from demographic groups that were previously undecided.
Opponents of Prop. 50, led by Jessica Millan Patterson, the former head of the California Republican Party, are focusing their efforts on mobilizing turnout among undecided voters. Patterson stated, “Right now, it’s all about turnout,” emphasizing the need to reach those who remain uncertain about the redistricting proposal. The No on 50 campaign frames its message around “good governance” rather than partisan politics, hoping to resonate with voters across the political spectrum.
The push for Prop. 50 has its roots in a broader political strategy. In August, Newsom advocated for redistricting that could advantage Democrats in upcoming midterm elections. The proposed boundaries are expected to favor Democrats in five districts and would remain in effect until 2030, after which an independent commission would reassume control over redistricting. This approach aims to counter similar gerrymandering tactics seen in states governed by Republicans, such as Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina.
Supporters of Prop. 50 have reinforced the notion that the measure serves as a referendum on the Trump administration, with national implications for policies affecting various demographics. A recent advertisement features Newsom alongside notable Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and prominent congress members, urging voters to support Prop. 50. The ad asserts, “California, with Prop. 50, you have the power … to stand up to Donald Trump … to protect reproductive freedom … to give America a fair midterm.”
In addition to campaign efforts, civic engagement initiatives are fostering voter participation among communities of color. On October 28, 2025, a gathering in Costa Mesa brought individuals together to celebrate Día de los Muertos while discussing the importance of voting. The event, hosted by Resilience Orange County, featured art projects and discussions led by deputy director Oswaldo Farias. Participants were encouraged to view voting as a celebration of their rights and a means to honor their ancestors.
As the campaign enters its final stretch, the emphasis on voter turnout remains paramount for both sides. With more than 4 million California voters having already cast their ballots, the outcome of Prop. 50 will not only shape the state’s political landscape but also reflect broader trends in voter engagement and civic participation across the nation.
