Clippers Collapse in Second Half, Suffer 6th Straight Home Loss
The Los Angeles Clippers faced a disappointing defeat against the Memphis Grizzlies, losing 112-107 on November 24, 2023. This marked the Clippers’ sixth consecutive loss at home, a streak that has eliminated them from contention in the NBA Cup. The team showed promise in the first half, but faltered in the second, failing to maintain their early momentum.
The Clippers (5-14) started strong, showcasing a tenacious defense that disrupted multiple layup attempts and limited the Grizzlies to just five fast-break points. For the first time in weeks, the team displayed a coordinated effort, with both of their star players contributing double-digit scoring. By halftime, the Clippers held a solid 63-50 lead, bolstered by a combined 35 points from Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.
However, as the second half commenced, the Clippers’ defensive intensity waned. The Grizzlies (8-12), who had struggled early on, began to find their rhythm. They reclaimed the lead at 87-85 just two minutes into the fourth quarter, capitalizing on a series of missed shots by the Clippers. Vince Williams Jr. extended Memphis’s lead to 89-85 with a crucial floater.
Despite the setback, Leonard responded with six straight points, briefly lifting the Clippers to a 91-89 advantage with 8:10 remaining. Unfortunately for the Clippers, the Grizzlies surged back, scoring ten unanswered points to establish a commanding 103-95 lead.
Coach Tyronn Lue expressed concern about his team’s mental and physical fatigue prior to the game, noting that players were showing signs of exhaustion. Despite Lue’s calls for urgency, the Clippers struggled to execute their game plan consistently.
Leonard finished the game with a team-high 39 points, shaking off the rust from a previous ten-game absence due to injuries. His performance included a three-pointer with just seven seconds left, which could have shifted the tide in the Clippers’ favor. However, the Grizzlies sealed their victory with two free throws by Jaylen Wells.
Harden also had a strong outing, contributing 23 points, seven rebounds, and ten assists. Ivica Zubac added nine points and 11 rebounds, but the team’s overall effort fell short.
The night was bittersweet as Clippers point guard Chris Paul received a video tribute during his first home game since announcing his retirement at the end of the season. Paul finished with five points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of play.
As the Clippers continue to grapple with their performance, they must regroup and find ways to translate their strong starts into complete games. The team’s ability to maintain focus and energy throughout all four quarters will be crucial as they move forward in the season.
