Spanberger Sidesteps Transgender Policy Question, Highlights Funding Issues

Abigail Spanberger, a Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, faced scrutiny during a recent interview when she avoided a direct question about transgender policies, instead focusing on federal funding issues and criticizing the Trump administration. This incident underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding transgender issues in Virginia politics, particularly as the 2026 gubernatorial race approaches.
When asked by a reporter about a claim made by Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears suggesting that Spanberger supports allowing “men in girls’ locker rooms,” she pivoted to a discussion on federal funding disputes rather than addressing the accusation directly. Spanberger highlighted what she described as “conflicting evidence or conflicting interpretations” regarding Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs.
She criticized the Trump administration for excluding “gender identity” from its interpretation of Title IX, which has been a significant point of contention. Under this administration, schools have been investigated for allowing students to use bathrooms and participate in sports teams that align with their gender identity, rather than strictly adhering to biological definitions.
Spanberger stated, “The reality is that the federal government has the ability to change the letter of the law, right? Through Congress, through the Senate, bills go to the president’s desk.” She emphasized the need for clarity in federal guidance regarding school policies on locker room usage, noting that many jurisdictions believe they are complying with the law based on different legal interpretations.
The former federal law enforcement officer expressed concern over federal funding being used as a leverage point by the current administration. She remarked, “What I think is so egregious is that this president continues to use the threat of federal funding,” referencing the impact on educational institutions and crucial research programs.
Earle-Sears responded to Spanberger’s remarks on social media, calling her answer a “word salad” and criticizing her stance regarding transgender policies. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller also weighed in, suggesting that Spanberger’s response was muddled, comparing it unfavorably to that of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Virginia has long been a focal point in the national transgender debate, and the issue has gained renewed attention ahead of the upcoming election. Candidates have faced tough questions about policies impacting transgender individuals, particularly in schools.
On a related note, concerns have been raised regarding a recent incident involving a convicted sex offender, Richard Cox, who allegedly accessed female locker rooms in Virginia public schools. This incident further complicates discussions around safety and inclusion in educational spaces.
During a recent debate, Spanberger was asked whether she would uphold or rescind guidance barring transgender-identifying individuals from participating in certain sports and accessing specific facilities. She did not provide a definitive answer, which has drawn criticism from opponents and observers alike.
A spokesperson for Spanberger reiterated her commitment to child safety, stating, “Convicted sex offender Richard Cox is a predator who should be in jail — and that’s exactly where he is.” They emphasized her dedication to working with law enforcement to protect Virginia’s children.
As the election approaches, Spanberger’s handling of the transgender issue and federal funding will likely continue to be a contentious topic in Virginia’s political landscape.
