Beloved Educator and Naturalist David Ellis Brest Passes Away
David E. Brest, a cherished educator and naturalist, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on October 1, 2023, with his wife, Patricia, by his side. A lifelong resident of Southern California, David’s journey began in San Gabriel, where he was the youngest of three boys. His love for the natural world blossomed during family camping trips, especially with his twin brother, Dennis.
David pursued his passion for nature academically, studying Forestry at the University of Oregon before earning a PhD in Biology from UCLA. This educational path led to a long and rewarding career teaching in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he inspired students for 35 years until his retirement in 2003.
A Life of Learning and Family Bonds
David’s unique sense of humor and intellectual curiosity made him a memorable figure in the lives of his students and colleagues. His famous photosynthesis lecture often surfaced during family gatherings, providing both entertainment and education, regardless of the circumstances.
He met Patricia at CSUDH, and they quickly formed a deep connection, marrying in June 1987. David was a dedicated family man who showed unwavering loyalty to all his loved ones, including both two-legged and four-legged family members. Whether tackling a challenging sudoku puzzle or resolving difficult conversations, he approached every situation with calmness and patience, becoming a steady presence in the lives of those around him.
Lasting Memories and Legacy
David’s legacy includes countless cherished family camping trips to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park. His ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove beside the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows, symbolizing his deep connection to nature and family.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Brest (née McElroy); stepchildren Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst; and grandchildren Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, Casey and Jay Pabst. He also leaves behind a host of extended family, including his niece and nephews, Carol (James) Brest Hare, Brian (Lonni) Brest, Art (Donna) Brest, Mike (Cathy) Brest, and Matthew Brest, along with his two sisters-in-law, Nan and Bridgetta Brest.
David E. Brest’s contributions to education and his loving presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
