Inventor Achieves Breakthrough with 2 Billion FPS Laser Video
A remarkable achievement in high-speed photography has emerged from the innovative efforts of inventor Brian Haidet, who recently published a video on his AlphaPhoenix channel showcasing a laser beam recorded at an astonishing 2,000,000,000 frames per second. This ambitious project, while technically a one pixel by one pixel recording, utilizes repetition to create a full rendering, illustrating the creative potential of modern technology.
Haidet’s journey to this milestone involved a complete overhaul of his existing equipment. In December 2022, he had already pushed boundaries with a camera that recorded at 1,000,000,000 fps. For this latest endeavor, he upgraded nearly every component of his setup, including the motors, hardware, oscilloscope, signaling, recording software, and processing software. The result is not just an increase in speed but also a significant improvement in resolution, enabling a more detailed capture of light behavior.
One of the most intriguing effects observed in this new setup is how light appears to travel faster when approaching the camera compared to when it is moving away. This phenomenon is an artifact of the experimental configuration, where laser beams reflecting off fog particles closer to the camera arrive sooner than those bouncing back from a greater distance. This effect provides a visual interpretation of special relativity, a concept that has long fascinated scientists and enthusiasts alike.
The implications of Haidet’s work extend beyond mere curiosity. His experiment opens doors for further research and exploration in the field of high-speed imaging and can have applications in various scientific domains, including physics and engineering.
For those interested in a deeper understanding of the technology and the principles behind this groundbreaking experiment, Haidet has also provided additional materials that delve into the technical aspects of his setup. This innovative work not only highlights the capabilities of modern technology but also exemplifies the spirit of experimentation that drives scientific discovery.
