Adonai Mitchell Reflects on Mistake as Trade Deadline Approaches
Wide receiver Adonai “AD” Mitchell of the Indianapolis Colts is navigating a challenging moment in his career after a significant mistake in a recent game. During a 27-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on September 28, Mitchell lost control of the football just before crossing the goal line, resulting in a touchback instead of a touchdown. This blunder has overshadowed his contributions to the team, leading to questions about his future as the team approaches the November 4 trade deadline.
Speaking with James Boyd of The Athletic, Mitchell expressed his desire for a chance to redeem himself. “You kinda get lost when you don’t get that opportunity,” he said. “I’ve just been trying to cherish every moment and just make the most of every moment I get because I don’t know when I’m gonna get that chance again.” His playing time has diminished significantly, as he participated in only six snaps during the Colts’ 40-6 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5. Mitchell was inactive in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals and logged just five snaps in the Colts’ 38-24 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on October 19.
As a 2024 second-round draft pick, Mitchell is currently on a cost-effective rookie contract that runs through the 2027 season. He acknowledged the pressure of the situation, stating, “This is all I ever done, dog. This is pretty much the only thing I’ve ever really found joy in besides just being around my family.” His commitment to the sport is evident, as he emphasized the importance of making the most of his opportunities.
Mitchell’s emotional response to his mistake is a testament to his dedication. Addressing teammates in a locker room meeting the day after the Rams game, he spoke about accountability. “You have to acknowledge what you did wrong,” he explained. “I know people want to ask me like, ‘Do I still look back at that? Do I still think it’s my fault?’ Hell yeah, I do. There ain’t a moment when I don’t think about it.”
This Sunday, as the Colts prepare to face the Tennessee Titans, who currently hold a record of 1-6, Mitchell will have another opportunity to contribute. As of Friday afternoon, ESPN BET listed the Colts as 14.5-point favorites, suggesting a potential for a decisive win.
“This is the most adversity I’ve ever faced, pretty much at the top of where I always wanted to get to in football,” Mitchell reflected. “I’d be a liar if I said it doesn’t get to me. I’m human.” His journey illustrates the challenges athletes face, particularly when striving to reclaim their place after a setback. As the trade deadline looms, Mitchell’s focus remains on proving himself and making an impact in the games to come.
