Arizona State Fined $50,000 After Fans Storm Field in Upset Win
The Big 12 Conference has imposed a fine of $50,000 on Arizona State University (ASU) following an incident where fans rushed the field after the Sun Devils’ 26-22 victory over Texas Tech University on October 21, 2023. This unexpected win marked a significant upset, as ASU entered the game as a 7.5-point underdog against the then-undefeated Red Raiders.
In a statement addressing the situation, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark emphasized the importance of safety for all participants involved, including players, coaches, and officials. “The Big 12 prioritizes the safety of all players, coaches and officials,” Yormark stated. He added that the Conference would continue to collaborate with its institutions to enhance event management policies at all Big 12 venues.
The game itself was a dramatic affair, with running back Raleek Brown scoring the decisive touchdown with just 34 seconds remaining. This came shortly after Texas Tech had taken a 22-19 lead, making the victory even more crucial for ASU.
This win was pivotal for the Sun Devils, boosting their record to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Had they lost, ASU would have faced serious challenges in maintaining its position in the race for the Big 12 title. Instead, they find themselves among several teams vying for a chance at the championship with five games remaining in the season.
The fine reflects a growing concern among sports leagues about fan behavior and safety protocols during high-stakes events. As the season progresses, both the Big 12 Conference and its member institutions will likely enhance their focus on ensuring secure environments for athletes and spectators alike.
