College Basketball Showdown: Top Teams Clash After Thanksgiving
The excitement of college basketball continues this week with a series of high-stakes matchups following the Thanksgiving holiday tournaments. A total of 10 games will feature teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, ensuring fans are treated to a feast of competitive basketball.
Duke, Louisville, and Kentucky Face Tough Challenges
The No. 4 Duke Blue Devils (8-0) are set to engage in two significant games within days. They will tip off against the reigning national champions, No. 15 Florida, on Tuesday, followed by a clash with No. 7 Michigan State on Saturday. Duke has already demonstrated its prowess by defeating formidable opponents, including Texas and No. 21 Kansas, at Madison Square Garden, as well as No. 25 Arkansas in Chicago. Florida (5-2) has recorded impressive in-state victories, but faced a setback against TCU last week.
Michigan State (7-0), known for its tough playing style under coach Tom Izzo, has secured wins against Arkansas, Kentucky, and No. 16 North Carolina. Before facing Duke, they will encounter undefeated Iowa, which stands at 7-0 and is on the verge of entering the rankings.
Meanwhile, No. 6 Louisville (7-0) is thriving under coach Pat Kelsey in his second season. The Cardinals have already eclipsed 100 points in four games this season, their highest scoring rate since 1989-90. Louisville, led by Xavier transfer Ryan Conwell and standout freshman Mikel Brown Jr., will face tough contests against No. 25 Arkansas on Wednesday and No. 22 Indiana on Saturday. The Razorbacks narrowly lost to Duke in their recent game, while the Hoosiers, off to a 7-0 start under coach Darian DeVries, are looking to maintain their momentum.
No. 18 Kentucky (5-2) is struggling with injuries and turnovers. Despite winning their games against smaller programs by an average of 41.4 points, they have faltered against stronger opponents like Michigan State and Louisville. Kentucky’s week starts with a challenging home game against No. 16 North Carolina, featuring standout freshman Caleb Wilson, followed by a matchup against No. 11 Gonzaga in Nashville. The Zags recently suffered a significant defeat, losing 101-61 to No. 3 Michigan.
UConn and Kansas in the Spotlight
No. 5 UConn is showcasing its championship potential with a strong lineup that includes preseason All-American Alex Karaban and high-scoring guard Solo Ball. The Huskies (6-1) have notable wins against No. 9 BYU and No. 14 Illinois but suffered a narrow defeat to No. 2 Arizona at home. UConn’s next challenge comes against No. 21 Kansas on Tuesday. The Jayhawks (6-2) are coming off an 81-76 victory over Tennessee and hope to welcome back star freshman Darryn Peterson, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.
As fans look forward to Saturday’s games, several matchups provide an exciting alternative to the conference football championship games. No. 1 Purdue (7-0) is aiming to maintain its perfect record against No. 10 Iowa State (7-0), which recently climbed in the rankings following wins against No. 23 St. John’s, Creighton, and Syracuse.
Arizona, now ranked No. 2, will host No. 20 Auburn at McKale Center. Auburn, under coach Steven Pearl, has encountered challenges, including a 30-point defeat to Michigan, but possesses standout players like UCF transfer Keyshawn Hall and guard Tahaad Pettiford.
In Nashville, No. 13 Tennessee will take on No. 14 Illinois, both teams looking to bounce back from recent losses. Tennessee narrowly lost to Kansas after previously defeating No. 8 Houston, while Illinois seeks to recover from a setback against UConn.
As the week unfolds, college basketball fans are in for an exhilarating lineup of games, showcasing some of the best talent in the sport.
