East Rowan High School’s Jaxon Lyons delivered an impressive performance during a recent football game, rushing for a remarkable 246 yards on 27 carries in a decisive 33-12 victory over South Rowan. This achievement marked a significant leap for Lyons, who previously recorded just 388 rushing yards for the entire season. The win, held at W.A. Cline Stadium on October 6, 2023, was East’s first dominant victory of the season, showcasing their growth after a challenging previous year.

The game highlighted a standout effort from East’s offensive line, praised by head coach Brian Flynn for their consistency and teamwork. Flynn noted that while the offensive line had shown potential throughout the season, the South Rowan game was the first time they maintained a strong performance throughout all four quarters. “Our o-line did a really great job in the South game,” Flynn stated. “For the first time, we were good upfront all night.”

East Rowan’s offensive line features key players, including Bryson Ware, who often switches between left tackle and a defensive role, along with Colton Paffrath, Mike Atwood, Damian Ruhnow, Diego Tovar, and Parker Yelton. Flynn emphasized their versatility, stating that the team employs various formations and strategies to maximize their blocking effectiveness.

The Mustangs utilize a mix of traditional and modern running plays, including buck sweeps and pin-and-pull techniques, which have been crucial for creating running lanes for Lyons. “We were able to use different formations to get favorable blocking numbers,” Flynn explained. “Our guards did a good job of pulling and helping Lyons get outside.”

Lyons, a talented sophomore standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 175 pounds, has also made strides in his dual role as a receiver, accumulating 22 receptions this season. His performance against South Rowan not only boosted East’s chances in that game but also marked a turning point in his confidence as a player. Reflecting on his development, Lyons remarked, “I know I’m running the ball with a lot more confidence than I did last year. A play like that gives you a lot of confidence.”

His success on the field comes after a challenging freshman year, where East Rowan went 0-10. This season, the team has shown marked improvement, positioning them as one of the most improved squads in the county. “This season has definitely been a lot more fun,” Lyons added, recognizing the significant turnaround.

In addition to Lyons’ contributions, East Rowan’s sophomore quarterback Julian Cauble continues to develop, having thrown two touchdown passes against South Rowan. Flynn acknowledged the strategy of adapting their game plan to the strengths of the players, stating, “Running the ball is who we are. That’s our identity.”

As East Rowan looks to build on this momentum, their recent victory not only highlights Lyons’ emerging talents but also reflects the team’s overall progress. With a strong offensive performance and growing confidence, the Mustangs aim to continue their successful season.
