Thomas Wehr, the former athletic director, coach, and educator at Blue Mountain, passed away on Saturday at the age of 83. Wehr dedicated 31 years of his professional life to Blue Mountain, contributing significantly in various roles, most notably as athletic director.

Before his tenure at Blue Mountain, Wehr had already established a notable career in education and athletics. He worked at Edna High School in Texas, the Carbon County School for Special Education, and Panther Valley High School. His commitment to athletics was evident as he coached multiple sports, including wrestling, basketball, football, and track and field during his time at both Blue Mountain and Panther Valley.

Legacy in Sports and Education

In addition to his role as athletic director for the Blue Eagles, Wehr served as an athletic trainer, demonstrating his dedication to student-athletes. His contributions earned him immense respect among peers and colleagues. In 2004, Wehr was honored as the Schuylkill League Athletic Director of the Year, recognizing his outstanding leadership and commitment to sports.

Wehr’s impact extended beyond his immediate responsibilities. He was a charter member of the Carbon County Sports Hall of Fame, established in 2012, and he founded the Blue Mountain Sports Hall of Fame, where he later received induction for his numerous contributions. Furthermore, he initiated the Blue Mountain Track and Field Alumni Association and served on the Blue Mountain School Board, reflecting his commitment to fostering community and alumni engagement.
