Lynnville-Sully Hawks Secure Victory Over Earlham on Senior Night

The Lynnville-Sully Hawks concluded their regular season with a 20-15 victory over the Earlham Cardinals in a Class A District 6 matchup held on Senior Night in Sully. The Hawks showcased a strong start, with early touchdowns from Gavin Fisk and Dawson James helping to establish a lead that they maintained throughout the game.
Fisk began the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown run, followed shortly by James, who added a 1-yard touchdown to put the Hawks ahead. A successful two-point conversion, completed by Connor Deal to Jack Bowlin, further solidified their early advantage. James recorded another touchdown with a 6-yard run in response to an Earlham score, ensuring the Hawks entered halftime with the lead.
The game, which was suspended with 2:39 remaining in the first half, was deemed official after both teams agreed, as district standings had already been established prior to the match. This victory marks Lynnville-Sully’s second consecutive win against Earlham and their first meeting since 2022. The Hawks have now secured a remarkable seven-game winning streak since suffering a loss to 1A No. 6 Pleasantville in Week 1.
Postseason Outlook
Lynnville-Sully, boasting a record of 7-1 overall and 6-0 in district play, will enter the postseason as the No. 1 seed from District 6. They are set to host Wapello, who finished the regular season with a record of 3-5, on October 24, 2023, at 19:00 local time. The Hawks’ performance against Earlham highlighted their offensive capabilities, with Fisk leading the team with 70 yards and one touchdown on seven carries, while James contributed 41 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.
Earlham, now sitting at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in district play, was led by Cash Eitel, who caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Brady Reynolds. Despite their efforts, the Cardinals struggled with rushing, managing only 35 yards on 17 attempts.
Defensively, Lynnville-Sully showed their strength, with James leading the team with four tackles. Other notable defensive players included Michael Spooner, who recorded 3.5 tackles, and Henry Sharp, with three tackles. Bowlin also contributed significantly to the defense with 56 yards on two punt returns.
The Hawks will look to continue their momentum into the playoffs, where they aim to capitalize on their strong finish to the regular season. Meanwhile, Wapello will seek to overcome their recent struggles, having lost their last two games after starting the season with a promising 5-1 record. This matchup is anticipated to be a critical challenge for both teams as they vie for advancement in the postseason.
