The Philadelphia Union has officially signed midfielder Indiana Vassilev to a new contract, ensuring his presence within the team through 2028 with an option for 2029. This move marks the Union’s first significant action in what is expected to be an active offseason. The announcement was made on Tuesday, solidifying Vassilev’s role after his impactful performance during the previous season.

Vassilev, who joined the Union from St. Louis City FC earlier this year, was acquired for a total allocation package that could reach up to $1.25 million. The deal entails $600,000 to be transferred to St. Louis in 2026, along with $250,000 tied to performance metrics that Vassilev has likely met based on his contributions this season. His previous contract included a base salary of $350,000.

In Coach Bradley Carnell‘s 4-2-2-2 system, Vassilev emerged as one of the key No. 10 players, a position he became familiar with under Carnell’s guidance at St. Louis. Throughout the 2025 season, he made 31 appearances, starting in 21 matches and logging nearly 1,973 minutes on the pitch. Vassilev achieved a career-high of five goals and tied his best with four assists, significantly contributing to the team’s midfield strength.

Vassilev’s contributions were not limited to the regular season; he scored in the playoff opener against Chicago and recorded a goal and an assist in the U.S. Open Cup during four appearances. His performance has not gone unnoticed; Carnell praised Vassilev’s work ethic, versatility, and positive influence in the locker room, stating, “Indiana was able to join the team and make an immediate and important impact this year.”

The midfielder’s journey began at IMG Academy, leading to his signing with Aston Villa in the English Premier League at just 18 years old, making him the second youngest American to debut in the league. Following various loan spells in lower leagues, he had notable tenures with Inter Miami, which paved the way for his permanent move to St. Louis City.

With teammate Quinn Sullivan sidelined due to an ACL tear, Vassilev is poised to take on an essential starting role heading into the 2026 season, likely partnering with Milan Iloski in the midfield. His presence will be crucial as the Union prepares for an expanded schedule, having qualified for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

As the offseason progresses, the Union’s investment in Vassilev reflects their commitment to building a competitive squad. With expectations high for the upcoming season, fans can look forward to witnessing Vassilev’s continued development and contributions on the field.
