Sharks Shift Strategy, Celebrini Shines in Forechecking Success
In a strategic pivot, the San Jose Sharks have adopted a more aggressive 2-1-2 forechecking style following a disappointing 6-3 loss to the Utah Mammoth on October 17, 2023. Coach Ryan Warsofsky emphasized the need for the team to focus on process rather than merely seeking victories. After this shift, the Sharks have seen an improvement in their performance, culminating in a 5-2 win against the New Jersey Devils on a recent Thursday night.
Adopting a New Approach
Warsofsky highlighted the importance of the team’s approach, stating, “We’ve got to worry about the process, and the way we have to work.” Since switching their alignment, the Sharks have capitalized on their speed, generating more high-danger scoring opportunities while reducing chances for their opponents. Although the team currently holds a modest record of 3-6-2, this marks their best start since the 2021-22 season, when they began with a 6-4-1 record.
Defenseman Mario Ferraro expressed confidence in the team’s youth and energy, declaring that their aggressive play has been beneficial. “Using our skating and being as aggressive as possible, what we’ve been doing… has really helped us so far,” he noted. The Sharks’ recent success can be attributed to their ability to pressure opponents, resulting in an increased number of turnovers and possession time.
Celebrini’s Stellar Performance
Macklin Celebrini has emerged as a key player, contributing significantly to the team’s recent successes. In the game against the Devils, he assisted on Will Smith‘s second-period goal, extending his point streak to six games with a total of five goals and seven assists. Celebrini’s current tally of 17 points in just 11 games makes him one of only five teenagers in the last 15 years to achieve this milestone within a single month, joining the ranks of notable players such as Connor McDavid and Clayton Keller.
Reflecting on the team’s style shift, Celebrini remarked, “I think it helps just not sitting back as much, not giving [teams] free entry.” He emphasized that increased pressure disrupts the flow for opponents and enhances the Sharks’ ability to maintain puck possession.
Since the change in strategy, the Sharks have demonstrated resilience, posting a record of 3-3-0 in their last six games, with losses narrowly decided by a combined four goals. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic commented on the team’s strong starts, noting, “We’ve come out pretty strong… gotten the first goal.”
The Sharks now face a challenging schedule ahead. Following their game against the Central Division-leading Colorado Avalanche, they will take on the Atlantic Division-leading Detroit Red Wings and also face tough opponents like the Seattle Kraken, the Winnipeg Jets, and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers.
“We’ve definitely taken steps in that process, of what it looks like to win… but our group is definitely taking the teaching and the coaching of what it takes,” Warsofsky concluded, underscoring the team’s ongoing development.
Injury and Roster Updates
As the Sharks navigate their season, there are concerns regarding player availability. Winger Ryan Reaves will be sidelined after sustaining a lower-body injury during the second period of the game against the Devils. His fall during a breakaway play resulted in his absence for the remainder of the match.
Additionally, rookie defenseman Sam Dickinson remains on the roster as the team weighs its options regarding his future. His participation in a 10th game would trigger the first year of his three-year entry-level contract, which could significantly impact his eligibility for restricted free agency in the future.
With a new strategy in place and emerging talent like Celebrini, the Sharks are well-positioned to make a significant impact as the season progresses.
