USC and UCLA Renew Historic Rivalry in Upcoming Showdown
In a significant clash in college football, the University of Southern California (USC) prepares to face its long-standing rival, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), on November 25, 2023. The game, held at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, marks a continuation of a historic rivalry that has been a cornerstone of college football for over a century.
Gathered beneath a cardinal and gold canopy tent, approximately 30 students from the USC Trojan Knights, a spirited organization dedicated to supporting the Trojans, are ready to protect their school’s traditions. Calder Swiderski, a member of the Trojan Knights, reflected on the group’s dedication to maintaining a 24/7 security presence during this pivotal week, describing the organization’s legacy as “historic.” He emphasized, “This organization’s over 100 years old,” showcasing the pride that accompanies such longstanding traditions.
With the Trojans’ hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff dashed, the team can now focus on preserving the spirit of college football traditions. A victory over UCLA would not only solidify USC’s undefeated home season but also improve the Trojans’ standing in the rivalry, where they have triumphed in 19 of the last 26 matchups.
The geographical proximity of only 11 miles between the two universities adds intensity to the rivalry. Head coach Lincoln Riley acknowledged the evolving landscape of college football during a recent media call, stating, “Some of those traditions have been preserved across the country. Some of those have not, and we’re fortunate that this rivalry has a chance to continue.” He underlined the importance of educating players about the significance of the Battle for L.A., not just during rivalry week, but throughout the entire season.
For many players, particularly those from Southern California, this rivalry holds profound personal significance. Offensive lineman Kaylon Miller, a product of Calabasas, expressed his connection to the game, saying, “My whole childhood, it was always such a big game.” He is determined to contribute meaningfully to the Trojans’ performance against the Bruins, emphasizing his commitment to “make sure that we go out there and dominate this week.”
As the game approaches, questions loom regarding UCLA’s starting quarterback, Nico Iamaleava. In his first year with the Bruins, Iamaleava has been a dual threat, leading the team in passing with 1,728 yards and 12 touchdowns, while also serving as the top rusher with 490 net yards and four touchdowns. His status for the game remains uncertain due to neck spasms he sustained in last weekend’s match against Washington. Interim head coach Tim Skipper noted that Iamaleava is currently day-to-day, and if he cannot play, backup quarterback Luke Duncan will step in.
On the defensive side, UCLA has faced challenges this season, allowing an average of 386.9 yards of offense per game. With USC’s offense, led by quarterback Jayden Maiava, averaging 301 passing yards and 479.2 yards of total offense per game, the Bruins will need to tighten their defensive strategies to contain the Trojans’ explosive plays. Maiava’s recent performance included matching a career-high in interceptions, but his ability to lead the team remains critical.
USC will also need to address injuries within its own ranks. Starting offensive lineman Elijah Paige is out for the season following surgery, and center Kilian O’Connor will also miss the game due to an upcoming procedure. These setbacks create opportunities for other players, including running back Waymond Jordan, who has been listed as questionable but has been seen actively participating on the sidelines.
As the rivalry game draws near, both teams are poised for a dramatic showdown that not only carries implications for the current season but also reinforces the storied traditions of college football. The atmosphere at the Coliseum promises to be electric as the Trojans aim to fortify their dominance over the Bruins in yet another chapter of this historic rivalry.
