West Rowan Falcons Remain Undefeated with 51-43 Win Over Statesville
The West Rowan Falcons girls basketball team continued their impressive start to the season with a 51-43 victory over Statesville on November 27, 2023. With this win, the Falcons improved their record to an unblemished 6-0, showcasing their resilience and skill on the road.
Senior guard Tiara Thompson once again led the Falcons with a remarkable performance, scoring a total of 30 points. This marks her third game of the season with 30 or more points, bringing her career total at West Rowan to an impressive 931 points. Her scoring prowess has been a significant factor in the team’s success thus far.
West Rowan’s head coach, Ashley Poole, acknowledged the challenges of playing away from home, particularly in a venue that can be difficult for shooting. “They’ve made some nice improvements over there, but it’s a big court and it’s a hard place to shoot in,” Poole remarked. “It wasn’t pretty, but winning a road game on a Monday is never easy. We’ll take it.”
The Falcons faced a tough opponent in the Statesville Greyhounds, who entered the game with a record of 4-3. Under the guidance of Andrew Mitchell, a coach with a background in winning state championships, the Greyhounds had recently secured victories against teams like Salisbury, North Rowan, and Carson. This match marked the first time a Rowan team had defeated them this season.
The game was tightly contested, with the teams tied at halftime. The Greyhounds managed to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, but West Rowan surged ahead with a dominant performance in the final period, outscoring Statesville 15-6. In addition to Thompson’s stellar performance, Jamiela Allen contributed significantly with 11 points, her best scoring outing of the season.
On the other side, Ava Waugh led Statesville with 16 points, but her efforts were not enough to secure a win for the Greyhounds. The final score reflected the Falcons’ ability to capitalize on opportunities in the closing moments.
With this victory, West Rowan will now turn their focus to the South Piedmont Conference, as they prepare to face East Rowan in their upcoming matchup. The team’s strong start has generated excitement among players and fans alike, setting a positive tone as the season progresses.
As West Rowan continues to build on their success, the performance of players like Thompson and Allen will be crucial in maintaining their undefeated streak and competing for top honors in the league.
