Amtrak and Metro-North to Boost Train Service to Albany

URGENT UPDATE: Amtrak and Metro-North Railroad are set to enhance train service between New York City and Albany after significant reductions earlier this year. Starting December 1, Amtrak will restore one round trip from Penn Station to the state capital, addressing the pressing travel needs of commuters.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced this vital service restoration on Monday, confirming that Train 235 will depart Penn Station for Albany at 3:15 p.m., while Train 238 will return at 12:10 p.m. This improvement will alleviate the travel challenges faced by many, as previous cuts left riders scrambling for alternatives.
In an exciting development for the region, Metro-North will introduce its first train service to Albany in over 50 years, beginning in the spring of 2024. The new morning train from Grand Central Terminal to Albany will operate once daily, with a return trip in the afternoon. This marks a significant milestone for Metro-North, whose predecessor, the New York Central Railroad, last provided this service in 1967.
The service reductions stemmed from logistical complications due to Amtrak’s ongoing work on the East River Tunnel, which connects Penn Station to the city’s eastern suburbs. The project led to the cancellation of three weekday round-trips between New York and Albany since May, forcing commuters to endure overcrowded trains and increased fares.
“Restoring Amtrak service and debuting Metro-North service to Albany is a huge win for riders,” Hochul stated. The announcement comes as a relief for many who have faced challenges in securing transportation between these key locations.
Amtrak plans to fully reopen the East River Tunnel by the end of 2027, but these immediate changes are aimed at improving the commuter experience now, as demand for travel remains high.
As the spring launch date approaches, commuters are urged to stay updated on schedules and availability. The restoration of these services highlights the ongoing commitment to improving public transportation in New York, ensuring that travel between New York City and Albany is more accessible than ever before.
