Bucks Coach Rivers Stands Firm Amidst Team’s 45-Point Loss
UPDATE: Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers has confirmed he will not implement major changes to his struggling team after a devastating 45-point loss to the Brooklyn Nets on December 3, 2023. The Bucks, currently at 11-16, have not secured back-to-back victories since late October and are grappling with the absence of two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has been sidelined for two weeks due to a right calf strain.
Following the humiliating defeat, which tied the Nets’ record for their largest margin of victory, Rivers expressed confidence in his squad. “We like our team,” he stated after practice on Wednesday. “We’re not playing well for a lot of reasons, but you don’t recreate the wheel. Teams that do that fail.”
The Bucks have had a challenging season, winning only four of their first five games but faltering with a 7-15 record since. They have not played since their loss on Sunday, allowing them a rare opportunity for back-to-back practices. “It was just an embarrassing game for us,” said guard Ryan Rollins. The Bucks are set to face the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, and players are eager for redemption.
“A loss like that wakes you up,” said guard Kevin Porter Jr.. “You don’t want to be on the end of that stick.”
Despite the dismal start, Rivers emphasized that the team is not considering a complete overhaul. “Yeah, we want to do things better. We like what we run,” he stated, highlighting the need for improved execution without abandoning their current strategy. “This is not where we’re at. We’re not even thinking in those terms.”
The Bucks’ struggles have sparked speculation about Antetokounmpo’s future, although Rivers refuted claims that the All-NBA player is in discussions about whether to stay in Milwaukee or seek a trade. The Bucks have only managed a 2-8 record without him on the court.
However, there remain glimmers of hope. Milwaukee has impressive victories against the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors earlier this season, showcasing their potential even without their star player. Yet, they have suffered defeats against struggling teams like Washington and Charlotte, raising concerns about their consistency.
Guard Myles Turner stressed the importance of regaining their early-season spirit. “When you start to lose, it knocks your spirit a bit,” he noted. “It’s just really no time for excuses at this point. You have to go out there and perform.”
With the Raptors game looming, the Bucks are determined to improve their performance and regain momentum. Rivers concluded, “I’m far more focused on execution than feelings. Something has to give you confidence, and we need to make that happen.”
This situation is critical for the Bucks, who must find a way to rally and turn their season around before it’s too late. Fans will be watching closely as the team attempts to bounce back against the Raptors.
