Cowboys Acquire Joe Milton as Backup Quarterback for 2025 Season
UPDATE: The Dallas Cowboys have officially acquired quarterback Joe Milton from the New England Patriots, adding depth to their roster just ahead of the 2025 NFL season. This trade, finalized on April 3, 2025, involved the Cowboys sending a fifth-round draft pick to New England, securing Milton as the backup to star quarterback Dak Prescott.
Milton, a 25-year-old from Pahokee, Florida, has drawn attention for his impressive physical attributes, standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 246 pounds. His powerful arm has led analysts to compare him to former NFL MVP Cam Newton, a testament to his potential impact on the field.
During his collegiate career at Michigan and Tennessee, Milton showcased his remarkable throwing capabilities, including an impressive feat of tossing an orange over 110 yards. His ability to deliver deep passes and tight throws has made him a standout prospect after being selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft (193rd overall).
Milton made his NFL debut on January 5, 2025, completing two touchdowns in a game that marked a bittersweet victory for the Patriots, who ended the season with a 4-13 record. Despite the win, the Patriots’ fans were left disheartened, as it hindered their chances for the first overall draft pick, leading to the firing of head coach Jerod Mayo.
This preseason, Milton secured his spot on the Cowboys’ roster despite a rocky start. Cowboys’ management highlighted his potential, with officials stating, “He’s a guy we want to find out more about.” Milton has already seen action in two games this season, though both outings were in challenging circumstances. In a 31-14 loss to the Chicago Bears, he completed 3 of 5 passes for 41 yards but suffered an interception in the end zone. Conversely, in a 44-24 defeat against the Denver Broncos, Milton found success, completing 3 of 4 passes for 58 yards and scoring his first touchdown as a Cowboy.
As the Cowboys look to build on their season, Milton’s development will be critical. Fans will be eager to see how he performs as he gains more experience behind Prescott. With the Cowboys’ eyes set on playoff contention, the urgency for Milton to adapt and excel could shape the trajectory of the team’s season.
Stay tuned for more updates on Joe Milton and the Dallas Cowboys as they prepare to tackle the challenges of the 2025 NFL season.
